Test strips are consumables and are purchased according to the type of glucometer. Most often, blood for analysis is simply applied in a thin layer to the test strip. However, there are also test strips that themselves absorb the required amount of blood.

The same applies to the required blood volume. On average, a home glucometer requires 0.3-1.5 µl of blood - this corresponds to one small drop. Minimal blood sampling is important if the patient is afraid of punctures or the sight of blood (for example, a child), as well as with increased sensitivity of the fingers.

An important parameter for classifying glucometers is the type of calibration . Initially, all glucose meters measured glucose in whole blood, but laboratories use blood plasma for the same analysis because this method of measurement is considered more accurate. Plasma contains 12% more glucose than whole blood, and this often led to discrepancies between laboratory and home results. To bring the results to a single standard, the World Health Organization recommended that manufacturers of glucometers calibrate devices using plasma.

Currently, both glucometers calibrated using whole blood and glucometers calibrated using blood plasma are available. Both show accurate results. They are the same “sugar”, just measured by different standards. In this regard, when using a glucometer, it is important to know exactly how it is calibrated and by what standard glucose is measured in your clinic, in order to bring the results to the same denominator if necessary.

Another important parameter for classifying glucometers is the method of specifying the test strip code. To code a glucometer means to set it to a certain level of sensitivity of the test strip reagent so that it gives the most accurate result. Essentially, this is a calibration based on the parameters of a given batch of test strips. Coding must be done each time you start a new pack of test strips and before using the meter for the first time.

In earlier models of glucose meters, coding was done manually - you had to enter the test strip code printed on the packaging. Currently, glucometers are coded with control test strips or electronic chips. Working with the chip is simple: insert it into the glucometer, and that’s it - the device is ready for use. Information has appeared on the Internet that the British company MediWise is developing a non-invasive glucometer called Glucowise.
Blood glucose levels are measured at the capillary level, without a single finger prick. Principle of operation:

Glucowise will contain a special sensor that transmits high-frequency waves through a certain area of ​​​​the skin (earlobe or skin fold between the thumb and index finger). The second sensor receives the signal and compares it with the original radio waves. Based on the algorithm, the blood glucose level will be calculated.

The analysis will take only 10 seconds. All measurement results can be transferred to a smartphone through a special application or Smart Cloud (cloud server).

Glucowise was planned to be put into mass production after clinical trials in 2021. It’s already 2021, but I haven’t heard anything about the glucometer, apparently something went wrong.

Be careful, the device has not been officially created and is not for sale. Fraudsters have created a website and are allegedly selling Glucowise, but in fact they are sending you an ordinary Chinese glucometer. Don't be fooled!
