Washing or with aquafilter? Choosing a vacuum cleaner

Cyclone vacuum cleaners

Vacuum cleaner Polaris PVC 2004Ri with multi-cyclone filtration system and air ionization

A vacuum cleaner with a cyclone filtration system works without a dust bag: dust accumulates in a plastic container with two chambers and settles on a fine filter. A cyclonic vacuum cleaner can be a classic corded vacuum cleaner, a portable one, or a robot.

It works like this: dirty air enters a cyclone filter, where it moves downward in a spiral. In this case, the garbage is subject to centrifugal force, which presses it against the walls of the container. Most of the garbage falls into the container, and the purified air begins to move upward, again along a spiral path.

A fine filter (usually HEPA) is installed at the outlet of the dust collector. Depending on the class, it traps up to 99.99% of dust particles and allergens, thereby protecting the vacuum cleaner motor and our respiratory tract.

prosMinuses
  • Cyclone vacuum cleaners do not lose suction power if the dust container is full.
  • A cyclone filter is easier to clean than a reusable dust bag.
  • There is no need to regularly buy replacement dust bags.
  • Cyclone vacuum cleaners are always ready to go.
  • They do not have the unpleasant odor characteristic of vacuum cleaners.
  • You have to come into direct contact with the dust, emptying the dust container after cleaning.
  • When garbage collides with the plastic walls of the container, it creates noise.
  • When the container is overfilled in simple models, the HEPA filter is subject to a heavy load, and it fails faster.

Flaws

In addition to the obvious advantages, such filters have some disadvantages.

  • Unfortunately, a large number of models of these vacuum cleaners are designed only for dry cleaning. To get more features, you will need to spend more money on a universal model of vacuum cleaner with a cyclone filter.
  • The weak point is the inability of the cyclone filter to efficiently collect very light and almost weightless particles, for example, fluff or hair.
  • These models require more electricity than analog devices. This is due to the large amount of power that the vacuum cleaner uses.
  • The device tends to accumulate static electricity during long-term operation, which over time begins to spread to the surface of the vacuum cleaner body. Therefore, situations of shock with this current cannot be excluded . And although this is completely harmless to health, an unexpected blow can be very unpleasant.
  • If large enough particles of debris penetrate into the dust collector container, the vacuum cleaner begins to make characteristic unpleasant sounds. This effect is achieved due to the fact that the trapped particles of debris begin to hit strongly against the wall of the plastic dust container. It is especially noticeable when shards of glass or some metal parts get inside.
  • Most models do not have air flow power regulators . And the stability of garbage suction directly depends on the power of this indicator.
  • An insignificant disadvantage is damage to the dust collector body due to the fact that debris penetrating inside can leave small scratches on its surface. For example, when sharp particles and parts penetrate into the dust collector.
  • Such vacuum cleaners are not recommended for use by people suffering from a severe allergic reaction to dust, since the process of cleaning the dust container comes into direct contact with dust.
  • All models, regardless of cost, are made of lightweight plastic, which significantly reduces their service life : if dropped or subjected to a strong impact, the body of the device can easily be broken.
  • To completely clean the container of accumulated dust and dirt, you will have to thoroughly rinse it, which is not entirely hygienic.
  • Vacuum cleaners often turn off automatically in the middle of cleaning. The reason for this is severe overheating of the motor and low power of the selected device model.

It should be noted that modern manufacturers of this type of equipment take into account all the shortcomings of previous models and are constantly modernizing cyclone vacuum cleaners.

Vacuum cleaners with a dust bag

Vacuum cleaner Polaris PVB 1805 with dust bag

Inside the vacuum cleaner there is a bag where dusty air with wool, crumbs, allergens and other types of contaminants enters. The dust collector is made of porous material: fabric or multi-layer paper. The garbage remains in the bag, and the air, passing through the pores and filtration system, comes out.

prosMinuses
  • The body of the vacuum cleaner and the walls of the bag serve as sound insulators: the vacuum cleaner makes less noise.
  • The bag does not need to be shaken out after each cleaning.
  • These vacuum cleaners are easy to use.
  • If the bags are disposable and have a good closing valve, there is no contact with dust and debris.
  • Vacuum cleaners with a bag are usually lighter than vacuum cleaners with a cyclone or aqua filter.
  • Regular replacement of dust bags is required.
  • When the dust container is full, the suction power of the vacuum cleaner decreases. In addition, the increased load causes the motor to overheat.
  • The dust is stored in the bag from replacement to replacement, and along with it - dust mites, mold spores, and microorganisms.
  • If the old bag is full and there is no replacement bag, you cannot use the vacuum cleaner.
  • The air passing through the bag may acquire an unpleasant odor at the exit.

Vacuum cleaners with container

As many have realized, in such models the bag we are used to is replaced with a container .
Models with containers are also called “cyclonic”. They began to be called that because when the vacuum cleaner operates, a cyclone actually forms inside the plastic container. All the dust remains on the walls of the tank, and after turning off the vacuum cleaner, it settles. Such containers are most often transparent so that the degree of contamination can be easily determined during use. In more modern models, the tanks have several sections. All large debris gets into one of them, and finer dust into the other.

pros

As usual, let's start by looking at the advantages of cyclone vacuum cleaners .

  • Economical. We have already discussed that buying disposable bags every time is quite problematic. Thanks to the container, you won’t have to make unnecessary expenses. When cleaning the vacuum cleaner, simply pull out the container, shake the contents into the trash and place the container back.
  • Stable power. No matter how full the container is, the power of your vacuum cleaner will remain the same.
  • No smell. Cyclone vacuum cleaners are almost completely odorless when cleaning. When using a bag, heated air passes through the bag of dust, resulting in a not very pleasant smell.
  • Reservoir with departments. If you purchase a vacuum cleaner with such a container, you can easily find small lost items when cleaning. They will not be mixed with dust, but will end up in separate containers for larger debris.

Minuses

Unfortunately, such models have quite a few disadvantages . They do not cover all the positive aspects, but when choosing, they are also worth considering.

  • Noise. Unlike bagged vacuum cleaners, cyclones are much noisier. Of course, it still depends on the model itself, but the fact remains a fact.
  • Filters. One problem is the need to wash filters frequently. In addition, if you accidentally pinch the hose or pull in a large object, the stable air supply will be disrupted. This will lead to a failure of the cyclonic rotation, as a result of which the garbage will settle not in the container, but on the filter. The performance of the device will decrease accordingly.
  • Container. The reservoir can be easily scratched by large debris. In addition, accidental breakage of the container will lead to big problems, since finding a new one is not so easy.
  • Dimensions. Cyclone vacuum cleaners are larger in size, as the container takes up a lot of space. If you choose a small container, the vacuum cleaner will have to be cleaned after each use.

Reviews

Let's move on to real reviews of cyclone models.

We had to repair the container vacuum cleaner because some small debris got into the impeller through the container and jammed it. As a result, the engine burned out. Why am I saying this...in some ways these models are more convenient, but they have to be repaired more often. And this is more difficult to do than with bagged vacuum cleaners.

Vitaly

There was both a bagged and a cyclone vacuum cleaner. Each has its own pros and cons. A vacuum cleaner with a bag is more convenient to use, but buying bags becomes more and more expensive over time. There is no such problem with a container. Of course, in the advertising videos, such vacuum cleaners have some advantages, but in reality they are more difficult to clean and are noisier.

Vacuum cleaners with aqua filter

Vacuum cleaners with an aqua filter should not be confused with washing vacuum cleaners: they are intended only for dry cleaning. Air containing dust and dirt passes through a water tank. Dirt particles get wet and settle to the bottom. Small dust particles can fly away with air bubbles, but they will be caught by additional filters. Clean and moist air comes out. The higher the humidity level, the more likely it is that dust in the air will become wet and settle on the floor, where it can be easily removed.

There are two filtration technologies: turbulent aquafilter and active separator. The first creates random turbulence of water, due to which it mixes with dust. The second is a turbine that rotates very quickly and creates a whirlpool that can capture up to 99.99% of dust. The remaining hundredths of a percent are captured by a HEPA filter.

After cleaning, dirty water must be poured out, and the reservoir underneath must be washed and dried.

How the device works

a cyclone filter is , you need to understand its basic operating principles.

  • At the beginning of working with the equipment, immediately after turning it on, a powerful air flow arises, which quickly sucks in various particles of dirt, debris and dust (threads, crumbs, fine dust, etc.).
  • The stream of strong air that passes through the first cyclone filter, before entering the dust collector - a plastic container, passes through a simple fine mesh made of plastic.
  • As for the smallest particles of dirt and dust, they are blocked by the second filter, which visually resembles dense cotton wool in the shape of a flat plate.
  • Subsequently, almost all the debris collected by the vacuum cleaner during the cleaning process (with the exception of the smallest dust particles) penetrates into the dust collector, which has the shape of a cone with a cut off end.
  • It should be noted that the cropped cone shape of the dust collector was not made by chance. The fact is that thanks to this, it is possible to create a powerful tornado effect , due to which all the dirt seems to swirl in a whirlwind, after which it settles at the bottom. A similar effect is achieved due to the influence of centrifugal force.
  • Due to this effect, almost clean air comes out of the cyclone vacuum cleaner, which is completely free of dust impurities.

During operation of the device, all the dust in it is harmoniously redistributed according to the principle of a tornado, due to which a double cyclone is formed. In this case, the first filter is external and is necessary to retain large debris, while the second filter is internal and is designed to collect fine dust and particles. As a result of this, all the dirt settles on the walls of the filter chamber.

Advantages and disadvantages

prosMinuses
  • Excellent dust retention.
  • Humidify the air in the room. Fine flying dust gets wet and settles on the floor, where it can be easily collected. As a result, cleaning is required less often.
  • There is no loss of suction power as the container fills.
  • No need to buy dust bags.
  • More bulky and heavier than regular and cyclonic ones.
  • It needs to be washed regularly and dried thoroughly.
  • They are relatively expensive.

Weigh the pros and cons of vacuum cleaners with different types of dust collectors. What is more important to you: ease of use, light weight, or humidified air after cleaning? We hope our review will help you make the right decision.

Positive traits

Compared to other types of vacuum cleaners, cyclones have the following advantages:

  • Quite light weight;
  • Increased dust collection efficiency;
  • No need to shake out and replace dust bags;
  • Easy to use and no need to use a large number of attachments;
  • Low cost.

Regarding the process of cleaning the container, in this case the advantage of this type of vacuum cleaner is quite conditional. After each cleaning of the house, it should be thoroughly washed and dried. Despite this, it cannot break and does not need to be replaced. This is quite convenient when performing repairs when a large amount of construction debris accumulates in the room, which can damage the bag.
