Our moidodyrs

iRobot Roomba 880 , RUB 38,000.

The most modern model of the four. Equipped with IR sensors to determine the distance to walls. There is an audio-optical air flow analyzer on board to determine the intensity of contamination of the area. If it's muddy, Rumba will go back and forth several times. Hidden at the bottom of the vacuum cleaner are 6 height difference sensors that prevent the device from falling off the steps. The iAdapt Responsive intelligent self-learning system is responsible for orientation in space. The kit includes two restrictive beacons that operate in the “virtual wall” mode (the robot will not enter it), “entry into the zone is prohibited” (placed near the dog bowls) and Lighthouse (if the apartment is large, then they are placed in the doorways and help Rumba return to the base).

Clever&Clean Z-Series Black Diamond , RUB 16,000.

The cheapest robot in our review. There are no special bells and whistles. There is no orientation system, which is why the vacuum cleaner takes an incredibly long time to clean the room. Does not react to the legs of chairs and tables, moving furniture around the room. It is a complete reflection of the saying “you have strength, you don’t need intelligence.”

Neato Botvac D85 , 46,000 rub.

The only vacuum cleaner that is not round in shape is a kind of symbiosis of a circle and a square. It has SLAM technology (from the English Simultaneous Location and Mapping, simultaneous navigation and map creation), which is being tested in Google cars. An IR laser in the tower above the body is responsible for cartography on the D85. The robot “sees” the room so clearly, avoids all obstacles so elegantly and copes with the task so quickly that it captivated me with its intelligence. The bot first explores the room and then begins to move in straight lines. Below is a comparison of iRobot and Neato's trajectories. It can be seen that Neato's trajectory is similar to a zigzag, while its competitors lack order.

Neato cleans rooms up to 150 sq.m. Equipped with a height difference sensor. If the Botvac D85 does not have time to cover the entire area of the apartment, then it returns to the base, charges and continues cleaning from the last checkpoint. In tight spaces where other robots stall, Neato lifts its snout, reducing its surface area, and climbs out of the trap. Lapulya!

iClebo Arte , 30,000 rub.

Has IR obstacle and height difference sensors. Able to overcome high rapids. Builds a map of the room through the camera on the body. Unfortunately, the model is morally outdated. It has not been technologically updated since 2012, losing its leadership to smarter competitors.

Important Features to Select

In any store, the robot vacuum cleaner section is overflowing with various options. All devices look approximately the same, but their characteristics and functionality are radically different.

This is what determines such a difference in price: the simplest assistants cost no more than 5,000 rubles, and the most richly stuffed ones cost several tens of thousands of rubles.

What should you pay attention to when choosing?

  1. Navigation type. There are models on the market with one of 4 methods of orientation in space: IR sensors, gyroscope (both options with a mechanical soft-touch bumper), camera, laser rangefinder (lidar). Vacuum cleaners with lidar are the most “smart” in terms of navigation, but also the most expensive. Models with a mechanical soft-touch bumper belong to devices in the mid-price segment. Gadgets with a camera create a route and remember it, which is why they are also considered one of the best.
  2. Operating time and area of cleaned space. On average, robot vacuum cleaners work for 1.5-2 hours without recharging, but some cover 60 square meters during this time, while others cover 150. Therefore, you need to take into account the area of your apartment when purchasing a device.
  3. Battery type. The most reliable are lithium-ion and lithium-polymer, but nickel-metal hydride ones have more disadvantages than advantages.
  4. Volume of the waste container. For a room of up to 50 square meters, 0.3 liters will be enough, from 50 to 80 square meters - half a liter, and for large apartments and private houses, a vacuum cleaner with a container of 0.5 to 1 liter is suitable.
  5. Noise level. If you have small children in the house or are generally not comfortable with noisy work, it is better to buy a robot vacuum cleaner with a noise level of up to 50 dB.
  6. Rich in functions. Timer, control from a smartphone, delayed start, wet cleaning - this is also worth paying attention to. The more functions, the better, but there is no need to buy a device that is too sophisticated if a number of functions will never be useful.
  7. The ability to overcome obstacles. Cords, thresholds and walls will force some devices to turn around, while others will force them to smoothly go around or overcome. With the first one there will be many problems: it will have to be constantly guided manually and carried around the apartment. The better the robot vacuum cleaner copes with obstacles, the less human participation in cleaning.
  8. Filter type. HEPA filters, which consist of several layers and have a denser material texture, are considered advanced.
  9. Availability of replaceable nozzles included. Turbo brushes, electric brushes and other attachments allow you to clean different floor coverings (linoleum, carpet, long-pile carpet), as well as get into hard-to-reach places and clean in corners.

Types of iRobot vacuum cleaners

If we consider the types of iRobot robotic vacuum cleaners by type of coating cleaning, then there are only three varieties:

  • Vacuum cleaners for dry cleaning. Such devices only collect dust and various types of dry dirt. They are suitable for linoleum, tiles, and short-pile carpets. The devices operate using built-in side and electric brushes and vacuum suction. The only drawback of such gadgets is that after cleaning them, the person himself will have to wash the floors directly.
  • Vacuum cleaners for wet cleaning. Floors are washed using special built-in mops or disposable napkins.
  • Vacuum cleaners for dry and wet cleaning. A combined device that performs all cleaning functions independently. You just need to give it a specific function. The most expensive type of robot vacuum cleaner.

Criteria for choosing a robot vacuum cleaner

The variety of robot vacuum cleaners is quite large, so choosing the right device is quite difficult. Before purchasing a product, you should study its key parameters:

  • Purpose. You need to decide for what purpose the vacuum cleaner is purchased, how often it will be used, in what room, and what type of cleaning will be used.
  • Performance. Robot vacuum cleaners have less power than corded ones. Purchasing a powerful device is advisable when regular general cleaning is expected.
  • Work offline. When you plan to use the device for cleaning large rooms or for cleaning carpets, it is recommended to purchase a long-lasting device.
  • Dust container capacity. The insufficient capacity of the garbage container will not allow you to clean large areas of coverage without interrupting to empty the robot vacuum cleaner.

Functional

Harvesting process

The iRobot Roomba i7 robot vacuum cleaner is designed for daily dry cleaning of any type of surface: parquet, laminate, linoleum, carpet and high-pile carpet. For high-quality floor cleaning, a 3-stage AeroForce cleaning system has been created, the description of which is as follows:

  • 1st stage. The side brush sweeps dirt out of corners, along baseboards, under furniture and directs it into the suction channel;
  • 2nd stage. Extractors with different tread pitches scrape stuck and dried dirt from the floor, comb out hair and fur from the carpet;
  • 3rd stage. The electric motor creates vacuum suction, which is increased 10 times compared to 600-series models. Suction power is controlled by the adaptive Carpet Boost system. When entering carpets, the vacuum cleaner automatically turns on the turbo mode and sucks in dust, sand and debris stuck in the lint;

Roomba i7 software, together with the Dirt Detect sensor system, determines the level of dirt in individual areas and, if necessary, lingers on them for more thorough cleaning.

The garbage container is equipped with a fine filtration system. The HEPA filter traps the smallest particles of debris, dust and other types of allergens. The container must be cleaned every 1–3 days, depending on the number of cleanings, the area of the room and the degree of contamination, but for convenience, the container is equipped with a fullness indicator.

Roomba i7 is compatible with Google Assistant and Alexa, and can be controlled by your voice!

Smartphone control

Another important factor in favor of purchasing the iRobot Roomba i7 is that it can be controlled from a smartphone. To do this, you need to download the iRobot HOME app. The application offers you the following control options:

  • Set a scheduled cleaning schedule. Not only can you set a start time for each day of the week, but you can also choose which rooms to clean;
  • Setting up cleaning cycle parameters (number of passes, use of the Carpet Boost function, control cleaning around the perimeter);
  • Monitoring the current state of the robot (state of filters, fullness of the trash container, etc.);
  • Detailed report on the work done Clean Map (displaying the most contaminated areas, treated area and other data);
  • Determination of cleaning zones on a map of the premises;

Orientation in the cleaning room is implemented using the iAdapt 3.0 navigation system, which works seamlessly with vSLAM mapping. The system reads the readings of surveillance sensors, video cameras, and height difference sensors, and based on them, plots a route between obstacles. Do you want to physically limit the robot's movement? To do this, use the supplied Dual Mode Virtual Wall. It operates simultaneously in two modes: linear and circular limiter.

Review and review of iRobot Roomba 612 and 615: find two differences from 606

The same vacuum cleaner, but with a work schedule via a phone application - iRobot 671/675/676. I highly recommend paying attention there.

Actually, yes, a review of new products for 2021 - the iRobot Roomba 612 and Roomba 615 robotic vacuum cleaners - could be fit into one sentence: this is the same Roomba 606 (my review of which can be read here) in slightly different outwardly housings. The 612 is distinguished by literally two decorative elements: a yellow “designer” ring and a carrying handle in the front part - all this is on the top panel. The 615 is a little easier to distinguish; its top panel is gray rather than black. Actually, that's all.

On the left is the iRobot Roomba 612 robot vacuum cleaner, on the right is 615. Find one difference

Perhaps some small insignificant components were changed inside. But in general, the body, wheels, bumper, sensors, AeroVac dust collector with a built-in motor, one side sweeper, charging base, operating algorithm and the main weapon - a paired block of central brushes - remained the same.

Let me get ahead of myself: the only notable thing about these electric machines is the price. These are the most affordable Airbots on the market. Not the most affordable robot vacuum cleaners in general, but “Americans” (iRobot is an American company). The disadvantages are obvious. Like the 606th model, newcomers are weak on the battery - the same low-power 1800 mAh lithium-ion battery is used here, on a single charge they work for 60-80 minutes. This is also the bare minimum package - the box contains only a vacuum cleaner and a base. No spare parts, no remote control, no virtual walls, no brush cleaning tool.

Control via phone? Come on, there’s not even a simple single timer for delayed cleaning.

The design and construction of iRobot Roomba 612 and 615 repeat the brand’s very first robot vacuum cleaners. A round flat pancake with a thickness of 92 mm and a diameter of 34 cm. A right angle between the side and horizontal ribs. In the center of the top panel there are three mechanical buttons with bright green backlighting: power on/cleaning, local cleaning, home to base.

Typical "chaotic", except that he drives along the walls

The robot is not equipped with navigation or cartography and its basic movements are purely chaotic. For orientation in space, it uses IR proximity sensors in the bumper and height difference sensors on the belly, as well as an odometer in the steering roller. On top of the mechanical bumper there is a protrusion with a circular IR receiver, which is responsible for searching for the base and virtual walls (which are not included in the kit), as well as for receiving commands from the remote control (also optional, and there is no point in it, it will only allow you to move the device, like radio controlled car). This tiny turret is the highest point of the robot.

On the bottom sides of the front roller there are charging contacts, on the side there is a single side brush with 3 rays of hard short bristles on rubber leads, on the central radius there are two drive wheels with a diameter of 71 mm with a suspension travel of about 30 mm. This allows the robot to cross thresholds up to 20 mm high. In terms of obstacles, Rumba 612 and 615 are doing well. They practically do not get tangled in wires, but if an incident happens, then with the help of a proprietary algorithm they can free themselves - they begin to rotate furiously around their axis.

The manufacturer claims the operating time from one charge of a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1800 mAh is up to 60 minutes (but this is a rare case when the robot can work even longer, up to 80 minutes). This would be quite good if the robot had navigation. But in our case, with a room area of more than 40 square meters, the vacuum cleaner did not have time to cover all the white spots with its throwing. So the declared 60 processed squares is a serious exaggeration, one and a half times. At the same time, the battery takes a long time to charge – 3 hours.

The iRobot Roomba 612 1800 mAh battery is the robot’s weak point

Branded block of two counter-rotating brushes

In the center of the bottom there is a proprietary block of two brushes, one with rubber lamellas, the second is a fleecy turbo brush, the brushes rotate towards each other. This block is installed on a movable frame with a stroke of about 1 cm, which allows you to press the brushes even onto a less than flat surface. In fact, this is a basic weapon that is really good at picking up debris from both hard surfaces and carpets.

Additionally, Rumba 615 and 612, despite their obvious budget, implement the Dirt Detect function, which is based on an optical sensor that scans the air flow with debris. If the system considers that the place is too dirty (many particles rise from the floor into the dust collector), then the robot makes several rotational movements in a diverging and converging spiral.

Behind the brush block is an Aerovac cyclonic dust collector with a capacity of approximately 600 ml. It contains a motor, so the dust collector is strictly not washable. But the HEPA-12 filter is washable. The motor is quite powerful and hums accordingly. There are no adjustments, so the robot almost always outputs around 58-60 dB. It is stated that this is almost the only technical improvement relative to the 606th model, but I cannot confirm this. It seems to me that in terms of noise they are identical - it is uncomfortable to be in the same room with a robot.

The dust collector of the iRobot Roomba 615 and 612 is designed to hold approximately 600 ml. Can't be washed - there's a motor inside

iRobot 612 and 615 do not have work schedules

It would seem that the noise will not bother those who have set a schedule for the robot and it works alone. But here is a nuance, these Roomba do not have a schedule, or even a single timer. You can start the vacuum cleaner for cleaning only from the button on the body. Coupled with a rather noisy motor, this seriously reduces comfort. It turns out that in real life, using a robot should look like this: you go somewhere and start the robot before leaving. Taking into account the fact that such equipment is, in principle, designed to work every day and it is with such a schedule that it shows itself in all its glory, not forgetting to start the robot becomes downright a duty.

The charging base is still the same, with a short wire

The base station is a small block from which a wire sticks out from the side (by the way, it’s only about a meter long), and on top is a circular eye of an IR transmitter, which looks similar to the robot’s IR receiver. At the bottom of the base there are a couple of pads with rubber stickers for greater grip on the floor. In principle, the base is secure. It also saves the fact that the robot always parks on it carefully, and does not forget to clean the area around it. In any case, you should leave half a meter of space around the base, otherwise the robot may take a long time to aim while trying to arrive.

Two “minimum required” operating modes

  • Auto - automatically traverses the entire available space in a chaotic manner until one of two things happens. Either the battery will not be discharged to some critical point (to what point is unknown; the robot leaves a reserve for returning to the base), or, according to its algorithm, it will decide that it has removed everything. After that, he begins to search for the base using the IR beam and leaves for charging, finishing the cleaning. The model has no opportunity to continue working. The robot tries to recognize baseboards and corners in order to walk along them, and also goes around the legs.
  • Spot – local cleaning in a circle with a diameter of approximately 1 m. First, the robot travels along an unfolding spiral, then along a converging one. The robot is carried to the desired location by hand.

Again, if the Dirt Detect system decides it's too dirty during automatic cleaning, the iRobot Roomba 612/615 will turn on Spot mode for a while.

Although there is no navigation, and the robot moves around the room as a whole completely chaotically, when it encounters an obstacle, an algorithm to bypass it is activated, this allows for improved cleaning around furniture and legs, as well as moving along walls and baseboards. In this regard, the algorithm has not changed since the 606th version; 612 and 615 work exactly the same.

Another difference from the purely chaotic navigation of its “Chinese” competitors is that the robot does not clean until the battery drains; it somehow roughly estimates the available area of the room. After he considers that he has cleaned everything, he leaves for the base. In fact, this is not a definite plus. Because the decision-making algorithm is not obvious, and the robot often decides that it removed everything earlier than it was worth it. And if I worked until I was exhausted, I would leave fewer white spots. As a result, this approach noticeably fails when the treated area increases to 30 m2 or more.

Field testing

In all tests of all robot vacuum cleaners, we left power control to the discretion of the automation. If there was no such mode, then the maximum power was forced on. If this was not available, then the device worked “by default,” as in the case of Airobot Rumba 612/615.

The test debris used was a mixture of white rice (imitation of large and relatively heavy debris), quartz sand (imitation of small, corrosive debris), Siberian cat hair and women's hair of different lengths (this is a classic). The initial mixture with a total weight of 100 grams after each test was carefully collected by the robot from its dust collector, from its surface, brushes and weighed on ordinary household kitchen scales (measurement error +/- 2 grams). After this, the test room was vacuumed with a regular Samsung bagless vacuum cleaner, the collected garbage was carefully collected in and out of it and added to that collected by the robot. If something was missing from the original 100 grams, we added the appropriate debris and scattered this mixture again for a new test.

The test room is a regular living room with a total area of 31 m², covered with gray laminate. The obstacles are exclusively natural, a table, a pair of office chairs, a sofa, an armchair, a coffee table, a clothes dryer, an ironing board.

Time mode Removed

Auto 1 pass 62:00 63%

Auto 2 passes 125:00 76%

Chaotic navigation performed exactly as expected. The robot went out into the field, worked for about 60 minutes before it thought it had cleaned everything up, and returned. Although the robot’s movements are chaotic, it roughly estimates the workspace using its algorithms. And for us this event occurred before the robot discharged the battery; the cleaning “speed” is approximately 0.5 m²/min.

The manufacturer claims up to 60 square meters of serviced space, but you need to understand that even adding a second room to the cleaning plan has a critical impact on the final percentage of garbage collected. By eye we would estimate the actual service area with more or less acceptable efficiency to be no more than 40 m2.

Quality of cleaning . The vacuum cleaner collected 63-76% of test debris depending on the number of passes. This is an average, but quite expected result, a C grade. If you assign more areas to the vacuum cleaner, the result will be worse. This problem is precisely the covering and chaotic passage of the room. The vacuum cleaner sucks quite well, I would even say well, it’s not for nothing that it makes quite a lot of noise. And the double counting block works no worse than the leaders, including on carpets. That is, where Airobot 612 passes, it removes by 5, but “in the sum” of the entire area, the final result is only 3 points.

Navigation . Absolutely typical chaotic movement across the available area, but with attempts to drive along the walls and clear parking, if the base is in the same room, not greatly blocked by interior items. It is almost impossible to return from another room. 2 points.

Area, autonomous operation . The manufacturer claims that iRobot Roomba 615 and 612 can operate for up to 60 minutes on a single charge of a 1800 mAh lithium-ion battery and, accordingly, a serviceable room area of up to 60 square meters. Given the lack of navigation, this does not happen in real life. Our tests showed that the robot works for about 80 minutes before it starts searching for a base, and during this time it can more or less satisfactorily clean about 40 m². 2 points.

Obstacles, corners . The robot vacuum cleaner Rumba 615/612 does not fall down the steps, even if the sensors are not perfectly clean. It can move over thresholds up to 20 mm high, and even onto carpets with a pile of about 30 mm long. It owes this to the excellent kinematic system inherited from the brand’s older models with large wheels with a diameter of 71 mm and a stroke of around 30 mm. It very rarely gets tangled in wires and tries to get out of them. It collects moderately from corners and along furniture, but gets into corners more or less regularly. 4 points.

Convenience . The dust collector here is quite solid, 600 ml, easy to clean, but cannot be washed - there is a motor inside. Brushes, especially the ones with bristles, of course, wind up the hair, and there is no groove for cutting, as well as a tool for this in the kit. Hair is also wrapped around the wheels and broom. They need to be cleaned. For this you need to deduct a point. There is no work schedule or even a single timer, for that another minus point. The robot does not work quietly - 58-60 dB. Another minus point. Total 2 points.

Availability of consumables, spare parts and service . Everything is good here, it’s not for nothing that Airobot is the oldest specialized company. Service centers are not only in Moscow. Spare parts and consumables are also available not only from officials, including analogues, for example, on Aliexpress. 3 points.

Additional functions. You can limit the robot's movement with virtual walls, but they are not included in the kit. So there are 0 points here.

Review verdict

The iRobot 612/615 Roomba robot vacuum cleaner has taken another step towards the buyer in terms of price, because usually Airobot more than pays for the name, and these can be found for only ten. And now for 10,000 rubles. this could be one of the best deals. It is clear that these robots can only be compared with robots without navigation, and among them they are not the dumbest - they are quite capable of avoiding obstacles and perimeter. Plus a good block of main brushes that don’t fail on carpets either. Service support and availability of spare parts? It is there.

But using it in apartments with a total area of more than 40 square meters is, in principle, not effective. And if the area is smaller, but consists of several small rooms of complex shape, then he will get confused in them. And this combination - the loud engine and the lack of a schedule really spoil the impression. Well, it’s impossible to launch it every time from a button on your person, and leaving home, having previously prepared for its launch, will be an impossible task for many. As a result, it can only be used by people who are obligated and fairly tidy in life in small areas.

My opinion? I would add up to the younger Xiaomi (the very first, the new 1C or on the edge of Xiaowa), but somehow the ruble fell and prices rose (review written in March 2021) ... But in any case, scrape together a couple of thousand and take iRobot 671/675 - Same as the described 612/615, but with Wi-Fi and weekly scheduling via the iRobot HOME app.
