The washing machine washes and rinses properly, but does not want to spin the clothes? Of course, you can wring out the laundry yourself, but this is not a way out. If the machine does not turn on the spin cycle, this is the first warning of a breakdown, which may worsen without diagnosis.
Why problems with spinning occur and how to fix the problem, read the article.
Causes and signs of failure
How to understand that the washing machine does not go into spin mode? Signs indicating a malfunction:
- The program has ended, but the water remains in the drum. No drain.
- You remove wet items from the drum that have not been wrung out.
- The drainage of water is very noisy.
- The water drains normally, but the laundry is not wrung out.
- The spin cycle works every once in a while, the machine does not respond to the set parameters.
- The washer hums as if it is spinning, but it doesn’t.
- The water drains very slowly.
These are the main signs that you should pay attention to if the machine does not switch to spin.
What could be the reasons that the washing machine is broken and does not spin out the laundry completely? There are technical faults that require diagnosis and repair:
- Problems with the drain pump . If the washing machine has stopped spinning, the drain may not be working, so the water simply has nowhere to go.
- The level sensor is malfunctioning . If the sensor breaks down, the electronic board does not receive a signal about the amount of water in the tank, and therefore does not send a signal to drain.
- The control module or its triacs are faulty. Each triac is responsible for the operation of a specific part in an automatic washing machine. Therefore, if it burns out, the board cannot control or issue commands.
- Malfunction of the electric motor . The brushes could wear out or the wiring could burn out. If there are problems with the operation of the motor, the drum will not rotate fast enough for a high-quality spin. Or the machine will not work at all.
- , which controls the number of engine revolutions, does not work Signs of failure are the same as in the previous case.
If a semi-automatic machine without a centrifuge does not spin by itself, then a broken automatic machine shifts this responsibility to you. You shouldn't put up with this. Carry out a thorough inspection and diagnostics of LG, Samsung, Indesit, Kandy and other models of washing machines.
Read on to find out where to start checking.
Serious damage
There are malfunctions of household appliances that can only be solved by specialists from the service center. For example, a washing machine stopped spinning due to a tachometer failure - the electronic equipment is generally in good working order, but such a breakdown will be difficult to fix without certain knowledge.
Water level sensor
In technical terms, it is a pressure switch that transmits all water level data to the main module. Having received the report, the automatic system decides when to turn on the spin mode; If there is no signal from the sensor, then the spin cycle will not turn on.
In this case, you need to contact a repairman. He will come, inspect the machine, and, if necessary, install a new sensor.
Engine speed sensor
A tachometer is installed on the motor shaft and controls the speed of revolutions per minute. If it is faulty or the wiring is loose, then the signal will not be sent to the automatic system. The speed remains the same, so you won’t be able to wring out the laundry.
Failure occurs very rarely, but it can be eliminated on your own by checking the fastening and contacts. If this test gives a negative result, the sensor must be replaced.
The engine has failed
The functioning of the entire device depends on the operation of this unit. It may stop functioning due to a break or short circuit in the winding when the graphite brushes have worn down to a minimum value. If for this reason the washing machine does not spin clothes, you will have to call the workshop - a specialist will check the system, replace the brushes or install a new motor.
Electronic module
If the washing machine does not spin, then the reason may be in the control module - the stabilizer has failed. The brain of the product is incapable of giving the correct commands: in this case, it ignores the spin mode, although the machine is working. Call a specialist, he will confirm the diagnosis, replace the stabilizer or reflash it.
Under no circumstances should you try to repair the engine yourself or change the stabilizer on the advice of a friend. Remember that the miser pays twice.
Drain pump
Statistics show that often it is the pump that fails, especially on budget versions of machines where there is no filter element in front of it, and any foreign object, for example, an underwire from a bra, can damage the pump. You can determine whether the pump is to blame for this by very characteristic signs:
- The washing cycle is over, but there is nothing except a strange slurping sound;
- it seems that the water will now begin to drain and the machine will switch to spinning, but it freezes;
- time passes, but everything remains at the same level - there is no spinning of the laundry.
You need to contact the workshop again, the pump will be replaced, and your pet will be like new: you won’t have to wring out the laundry by hand.
What to do if the washing machine does not spin
Before you do anything or start repairs, you need to make sure that the problem is broken. Perhaps you simply turned off the spin, so the machine does not finish the program.
- Look at the control panel; perhaps the no-spin mode is accidentally turned on, or the delicate wash program is set, in which there is no spin. Then you need to set the normal washing mode and adjust the number of revolutions.
- Top-loading washing machines may react to an overload of laundry. Also, with a small number of things, an imbalance could occur, when all the laundry gets bunched up into one lump, and the work of the SMA stops. In this case, the washer may try to spin the drum several times, after which it stops. You need to open the door and remove excess clothing or distribute it throughout the drum.
Modern machines are equipped with the “Imbalance Protection” function. Therefore, such problems occur in older models.
If you have checked all the options, but the SMA still does not turn on the spin mode, then proceed to diagnose the parts.
When draining
If the Bosch, Ardo, Ariston or Zanussi SMAs stop and do not drain water, the reason must be sought in the drain pump. There may also be a situation when the machine drains the water, but does not spin it out. There may still be some water left in the drum, which is why the spin cycle does not work.
What do we have to do:
- There is a drain hatch at the bottom of the front hull.
- Release the hatch latches and open the door.
- Place the container and remove the filter.
- To check the pump impeller, run the spin or drain mode.
- Shine a flashlight into the hatch hole and check if the impeller is spinning.
- If it does not spin, you need to disassemble the pump.
The drain pipe is checked at the same time as the pump. Depending on the model of the washing machine (“Atlant”, “Whirlpool”, “Veko”, “Gorenye”) you can access the pump through the bottom, front or back of the case. We wrote more about this in previous articles.
- Unclench the clamp of the pipe from the tank to the pump, disconnect it and check for blockages.
- Then disconnect the pump wiring and its mountings.
- Inspect the structure for debris; there may be something wrapped around the impeller.
If the pipe is clogged, the machine may hum, but not press, trying to drain the water. After installing the parts in place, check the operation of the machine. If the spin does not start again, replace the pump completely.
When washing
When the machine washes but does not spin, the problem may be in the washer motor. In this case, spinning is simply impossible, or it passes, but too weakly.
- Remove the rear housing and pull out the motor for inspection.
- Take out the electric brushes, which are located on both sides of the case.
- If they are worn out, replace them with new ones.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA - Also check the wiring for signs of burnout and test the coils with a multimeter.
If the motor coils are not working, you will not be able to perform repairs yourself. The engine needs to be completely replaced.
If the drum is not working well
If the SMA drum does not spin up or gain the proper speed, the reason is the Hall sensor. The device monitors the engine, but if it breaks, the engine may run erratically. The drum can spin, but not spin out the laundry, because it does not develop the required speed.
To check the tachometer, you need to remove the engine as described above. The device is located on the motor housing. If the sensor breaks, it cannot be repaired; it must be replaced with a new part.
Typical faults
If the Kandy machine does not spin out the laundry and does not drain the water, and the spin function does not activate even separately, then we can confidently assume that something is broken in the machine. In most cases, malfunctions occur in the drain pump, control module, and tachometer. Failure of any of the listed elements blocks the normal operation of the entire washing machine, and the laundry will not be spun. To determine the breakdown and fix it, you need to choose free time and prepare the appropriate tools - a screwdriver, pliers, a multimeter.
The washing machine does not open the door
If the water level sensor malfunctions, the system does not receive a signal to start draining water. Therefore, the machine does not press or open. In order to open the door and remove the laundry, you need to drain the water through the filter. Then wait until the lock is unlocked and open the door.
How to check the pressure switch (level sensor)? In all SM models “Ariston Hotpoint”, “Electrolux”, “Siemens”, “Daewoo”, “Atlant” the device is located under the top cover.
- Remove the two screws from the back.
- Move the cover away from you and remove it from the body.
- You will notice a pressure switch near the wall.
- Disconnect its tubes and check for blockages.
- The device itself is checked with a multimeter. Its probes are applied to the contacts of the device, and the indicators are measured.
If the sensor is faulty, install a new device.
Why doesn't the Indesit washing machine spin and drain the water?
The age of the equipment is of great importance in identifying the causes of failure. If the machine is old, then the reasons may be of a different nature, but if it is new (1-3 years), then the emphasis in determining the source of all troubles should be placed on the typical problems of this brand of equipment.
To begin researching and repairing laundry equipment, you need to have a little understanding of how the drain system works.
All the water involved in the washing process enters a rubber corrugated pipe, which passes into the garbage filter. Having passed through it, the liquid is poured onto the pump impeller and, under the influence of pressure, passes into the sewer system through the drain hose.
As a rule, the hose is located inside the body of the device, and one end of it is connected either directly to the sewage system or to a siphon under the nearest sink. Sometimes the hose is not connected to any of the above and is simply led straight into the bathtub, sink or toilet for the washing period. A blockage that leads to equipment malfunction can be located in any element of the drain unit.
You should start diagnosing your washing machine by checking its filter. Even with regular cleaning of this element, a small crumpled piece of fabric (socks, baby clothes, handkerchiefs, etc.) can get there at any time.
The filter can also become clogged after frequent washing of wool and other fleecy fabrics or due to foreign objects falling out of clothing pockets during washing.
Indesit washing machine drain filter
Perhaps this is the reason why the Indesit washing machine does not drain water. After lifting the machine and tilting it back a little, it will be useful to place some container under it so that the water does not spill all over the floor after unscrewing the filter. Also, you should not try to open the hatch, this could result in a real flood.
You need to carefully remove the lid of the garbage filter, drain the stagnant water and check the drain pipe for the presence of foreign objects. Most often, the cause of breakdown of washing equipment is the filter clogging factor.
If nothing is found, then the reasons for the breakdown of the “home assistant” should be looked for in the following parts:
- drive belt;
- water pump;
- tachogenerator;
- engine;
- brushes;
- control module.
Then you should check the drive belt. The machine should be moved to a larger room, remove the rear protective wall and carefully inspect the internal elements. The drive belt is located between the large and small pulleys. Holding the first one with both hands, you need to turn it in both directions.

If the belt sags, then buying a new one is inevitable. The usual tightening of this element will only lead to temporary positive results, but after a couple of months the breakdown may recur.
The next part that needs to be checked for serviceability is the drain pump. Perhaps the reason for the unstable operation of the washing machine is a clogged rubber pipe on the drain pump, because any filter cannot guarantee absolute filtration.
How to get to the pump? First you need to disconnect the equipment from the power source, drain the water through the filter, remove the powder cuvette and place the washing machine on its right side.
Indesit washing machine drain pump
If the “washing machine” does not have a bottom, then this makes the task much easier (perhaps the parts just need to be cleaned of dirt). In cases where the bottom of the model is protected by a lid, it is worth twisting it with a Phillips screwdriver, and then prying up the tray with the sensor located behind the lid and disconnecting the wire from it. Then the pump is inspected for the presence of foreign objects and debris.
If the cause of the malfunction is not found, then we immediately check the pump. Problems with this part can be detected immediately if it emits a quiet hum from the depths of the washing machine. This will mean that the pump is clogged and cannot rotate (then the solution to the problem will be simply cleaning the part), or that the pump motor is faulty.
It's easy to get this item:
- you need to remember or photograph the location of all the wires and rid the part of them. It is important to carefully inspect the wires, since a possible cause of failure may lie in a violation of their integrity;
- loosen the ties on the hose and pipe and pull them off;
- turn the pump counterclockwise and remove the pump;
- carefully prying and removing the pump housing;
- inspect the part for chips, worn gaskets or dirt. Frequent malfunctions of the pump indicate its imminent complete breakdown.
If, after eliminating all possible problems, the washer still refuses to work properly, then you should not give up, but on the contrary, the best solution would be to continue diagnostics.
There are known cases when the Indesit washing machine did not spin or drain the water due to an incorrectly connected, squashed or excessively long outlet hose, forcing the drain pump to work in increased mode. The hose should not be longer than three meters. If pressed or bent for a long time, a blockage or plaque may form in the tube.
The best solution in this situation would be to buy a new hose. Sometimes the cause of blockage is contamination of the pipe or siphon of the sewer system with threads, hair and other objects. To check the permeability of the drain hose, you need to blow into its end that is not connected to the machine and make sure that the air reaches the tank of the device.
Isn't that the reason again? Then you need to remove the wires from the motor, tighten the screws holding the motor and pull out the motor itself (first press, slide down, and then pull towards you). Find the ring-shaped sensor on the engine, remove it and check the resistance on it with a special device. If no deviations are found, then remove the brushes and check their integrity.
Indesit washing machine engine
If necessary, you can change both the tachometer and brushes. If a problem is found in the wires, it is more advisable to purchase a new motor.
The last cause of malfunctions in the Indesit washing machine may be the control board. But it is not recommended to go there on your own; it is safer and more economical for such purposes to give preference to calling a professional.
Spin does not turn off
Problems with the control module in the washing machine can result in the drum not stopping and the spin cycle not turning off. After such revolutions the car simply freezes. It may also be that the SMA squeezes, rinses, but does not wash. Or vice versa - it washes, but does not rinse.
All these signs indicate problems with the “brain” of SMA, so it begins to work incorrectly.
You can only visually inspect the control board yourself. It is better to entrust basic diagnostics and repairs to professionals.
- Unplug the washing machine.
- Remove the top cover.
- Pull out the dispenser tray. Pull it towards you, pressing the latch in the center.
- Remove the screws securing the control panel.
- Release the plastic latches and remove the panel.
- Release the wiring.
- To remove the board, also release the latches.
If no signs of damage are found on the surface of the board, contact the service center.
How to avoid breakdown
It is always better to prevent a breakdown than to repair it later. Moreover, the operating rules are simple:
- Before loading laundry into the drum, check all pockets and remove foreign objects.
- Install and connect the machine correctly according to the instructions.
- Sort your items before washing. Place clothes with decorations in special bags.
- Do not load too much laundry. This leads to rapid wear of the washing machine and poor quality washing.
- Install a voltage stabilizer. It will protect expensive equipment from sudden breakdown.
- Clean the drain filter and detergent dispenser periodically.
- Do not close the hatch door after removing the laundry. This promotes the formation of fungus and mold.
Now you know why the drum in a washing machine may not spin and wring out clothes. Be attentive to the first signs of damage, then you will be able to avoid expensive repairs.
The reasons are not serious
Undoubtedly, when a washing machine does not spin, the reason may lie in various parts of the unit and this does not always indicate a serious breakdown.
As a rule, the owners are to blame for why the washing machine stopped spinning.
After all, we all often forget about the need for operating instructions. We believe that since the machine spins, rinses and eventually squeezes things out in the drum, then it will always do this. But the spin cycle in the washing machine may stop functioning due to your clothes, or rather, an excess amount of them or washing heavily soiled clothes.
Drum overload with laundry
Surely you have noticed that in order to spin out your washed clothes, the machine must accelerate properly (about 600-800 rpm). Naturally, in order for it to accelerate, it should not be overfilled.
Therefore, when you decide to wash a bulky item (blanket, pillow, a lot of bed linen or down jackets, jackets), keep in mind that the weight of the wet fabric will become several times heavier. If you put too many things in the washing machine, then if the machine does not spin the item at the end of the program, then the reason may be due to overload.
Sometimes there are problems with imbalance. If, while rotating the drum, your washing machine knocks things into a non-uniform lump, then after several unsuccessful attempts it will not be able to squeeze out this lump. You will end up with wet laundry.
The reason is the drain filter
Another fairly common and harmless reason why the washing machine does not spin your clothes is a clogged filter. The causes of the malfunction are in the drain pump, which, due to a dirty filter, cannot drain water.
As a rule, if the washing machine does not spin due to a dirty pipe or filter, then you may notice the following behavior of the machine:
- Premature program stop.
- In various modes, the spin cycle does not work correctly, but in some modes everything is fine.
- When draining, uncharacteristic sounds appear.
Spin is programmatically disabled in the settings or a gentle wash is used
Often, the answer to the question why the washing machine does not spin clothes is an error in the program, and this very error was made by you, not the washing machine. This problem occurs on machines with mechanical rather than touch controls.
Simply put, when you set a program on which, say, “Cotton” was set, and next to it was the “Hand Wash” mode, the mode could skip even half a division.
As a result of this accident, the Zanussi, LV, Ariston, Whirlpool, Beko and any other machine stopped spinning. More precisely, a spin that suddenly stops working can be caused by ordinary inattention and a program change, so this is not a serious problem.
