One day we went to the sea and left a piece of fish and a preparation for chops in the freezer. A couple of days later, the power in the house was turned off (it was summer, a hurricane wind broke the wires) and was not turned on for 10 days - until our return. The pork-fish successfully defrosted, stank, and permeated the walls of the freezer with the stench. When we arrived, it was real trash. How did you get rid of the smell in the refrigerator after rotten meat? This and many other tips will be discussed in this article. Add this article to your bookmarks. Just in case, you never know!
Katya, 36 years old, housewife
All stories about the refrigerator are typical. Here's another plot for a horror movie.
...We went on vacation for 3 weeks. As it turned out later, before leaving the house, the husband turned off the electricity (so as not to short out, yeah!). And so we drive for a day in the car, getting home from the sea in the heat. I, exhausted by two restless twin boys, dream of a cool shower and a warm blanket. I’m driving, mentally wrapped in this blanket. And here it is, home, sweet home!
To clean the refrigerator, you need to stock up...
But what is it? In our two-room apartment there was no stink only on the balcony. The kitchen is just a room of horrors! To this day I don’t understand how the neighbors didn’t call the Ministry of Emergency Situations. There were about 40 kilograms of food - they stocked up properly, but of course, I’ll be tired after the journey! They threw everything in the trash - every piece had managed to deteriorate and become thoroughly rotten. The cheese turned into black, stinking pieces... The frozen pizza looked like four greenish-black wheels... The milk turned green and leaked... The chicken spread out into some kind of shapeless spot (a nightmare, what are they made of?!)
Instead of a sound, healthy sleep after an exhausting journey, we had to clean for four hours and deal with the incredible stench. Moreover, these four hours flew by like five minutes! It was the first time in my life that I encountered such an amber. The feeling was that I was locked in a room with a week-old corpse and a basket of rotten eggs. And at the same time I developed toxicosis. “Will I make it?” – I thought from old memory, washing the shelves and holding back the urge.
It was a miracle that she didn’t end up a widow – her husband managed to dodge. It was he who then had to clean out the stinking milk and maggots from the freezer.
From the Internet it became clear that the most radical way to get rid of the smell of a corpse is to take it and throw it in the trash along with the grub and the refrigerator. What else?! – I thought – He’s only six months old, he’s still just a child. He is practically our main member of our family. And definitely the most expensive after your favorite car.
In general, there was no question of throwing it away. And we didn’t let him go to waste!
Here, girls, I want to tell you that the main ally in this thankless task is not household products, odor absorbers, vinegar, charcoal and salt, but your patience and your precious time.
How did Katya manage to get rid of the smell in the refrigerator if the meat and goodies in the refrigerator were rotten? We read folk recipes from the following article.
There are known cases when rotten meat even contained maggots!
How to avoid odor in the refrigerator
To avoid the appearance of odors in your refrigerator, you need to periodically clean and wash it. Appliances with a No Frost defrosting system are cleaned 2-3 times a year. Devices with a drip system are washed once a month.
The contents of the shelves are checked weekly and those that look suspicious are removed. Throw away products that have passed their expiration date while they still do not emit an odor. Remove spilled liquid, especially milk and broth, without waiting for a stench to appear. Odor absorbers are installed to protect against unexpected spoilage of food.
Keep food tightly closed. If there are no dishes with lids, use cling film or foil and cover with bags. If you need to leave for a long time and there is nothing particularly valuable in the refrigerator, it is better to turn it off. Especially if the refrigerator is old, or there are frequent power outages. The following procedures are performed:
- Take out all the products
- Defrost the refrigerator and wipe all parts
- Leave the door open
Combinations of two products will help prevent unpleasant odors. Halves of a small lemon are peeled and filled with baking soda. Place in a small container and place on a shelf.
How to get rid of smell: what to do with the refrigerator
How to get rid of the smell of rotten meat in the refrigerator in a couple of hours? Start by thoroughly cleaning your refrigerator.
- Throw away rotten food. Throw away the rest of the food too - most likely, it has already become thoroughly stinky.
- Remove everything that can be removed from the refrigerator - shelves, glass, containers, etc.
- Soak all removable parts in the bathtub. Use warm water. Add Domestos, soda, and Belizna to the water (be careful with bleach - it can bleach the surfaces). After washing, soak the removable parts in clean cold water with one of the products for a day. Afterwards, ventilate them in the fresh air, or even in the sun.
- Baby soap gives good results - you just need to lather the unit thickly, close the door and leave it overnight. In the morning, wipe the surfaces with a wet cloth.
- Open the window in the kitchen (let's hope THIS doesn't happen in winter. Or won't happen at all).
- Wash the refrigerator with a good detergent, inside and out. Including the freezer. Odorgone is highly praised (Odorgone - this drug was created specifically for refrigerators in meat processing plants). The drug can remove the most persistent organic odor. You can also use home remedies (see table below), but they are less effective. I would also add a few drops of dish gel to the washing water.
- Check technical openings and cavities for leakage of rotten liquid. If rotten meat juice gets into the drain holes, they need to be cleaned. How to do this is described in the article based on the advice of refrigerator repair experts.
- Disinfect an already clean unit with Chlorhexidine (pharmacy antiseptic). This drug is neutral and will not damage surfaces.
- Wash kitchen surfaces with disinfectant. Freshen the air with a special spray. Or heat the salt by pouring it directly onto a hot stove burner. Hot salt will absorb the smell of rotten meat in the kitchen.
- Open the refrigerator to air for 2-3 days (Yes, yes! Alas!). Leave the kitchen window for ventilation. Hang a large rag soaked in vinegar on the refrigerator door. Vinegar will neutralize some of the “aroma” and you will more easily endure the ventilation procedure.
- If necessary, you need to clean, wash and ventilate again.
- When the “aroma” goes away, place an odor absorber in the refrigerator. The recipes will be below.
- Fill the refrigerator with food. While there is at least a hint of rotten meat left in the chamber, carefully pack and cover all the dishes, otherwise they too may “smell.”
Advice from Chistyuli. Personally, I always use Domestos to remove odor. To re-wash the “white friend” you can use it.

How to quickly remove the smell from the refrigerator after it has gone rotten
It is difficult to remove the smell of rotten meat from the refrigerator. After all, molecules and particles of the spoiled product got onto the top layer of plastic and became firmly ingrained into it.
But you can minimize it in this way:
- Remove all food from the refrigerator and freezer
- Throw away spoiled or suspicious items
- Wash all surfaces, shelves and rubber bands with detergent or soap solution with the addition of soda.
- They wipe it dry and don’t close the door.
Most likely, the smell will not disappear after such procedures. Remove it in one of the following ways:
The soda paste is rubbed into the surface and polished, removing some of the molecules embedded in the plastic. This cleaning removes more than half of the smell, but it’s too early to load food into the refrigerator. Use one or more folk remedies. When the aroma becomes not very strong, install the food and an odor absorber in the refrigerator.
If the aroma remains strong, you may need to disassemble the refrigerator by removing all rubber bands and cleaning the inside.

Remove odor from the refrigerator using folk remedies
For those who are afraid to use chemistry, you can try folk remedies:
- Vinegar 9% is diluted with clean water in equal proportions. Wipe all previously cleaned and washed surfaces, except for rubber bands. Vinegar can cause them to dry out and lose their elasticity. They wait for some time without closing the door. When the smell disappears, open them and turn on the refrigerator. If it does not disappear, take a clean cloth, moisten it with the same solution and leave it in the refrigerator
- The juice of one lemon is diluted in a ratio of 1:10 with alcohol or water. Perform the procedure as in the previous case. Used to eliminate strong odors. Instead of fresh lemon, you can use citric acid, 1 packet per 4-5 liters of water.
- Baking soda eliminates mild unpleasant odors, fights bacteria and removes greasy stains. Make a paste out of it, adding a little water, and wipe the surfaces. Then wash off with clean water.
- 30 ml of ammonia is poured into 300 ml of water. Wipe the surfaces with the resulting solution. Well ventilated. The method is extreme due to the pungent odor of ammonia
- If the aroma does not disappear, add soda and lemon juice to clean water. Pour into a spray bottle, which sprays in large drops. Treat the inner surface of the chamber with a solution, wetting them generously. Close the door for about an hour. Then open it and wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth.
- Grate 50 g of laundry soap, add a teaspoon of soda and half a liter of water. Mix thoroughly and wipe the surface with the mixture, then wash with warm water.
If you are afraid that the unpleasant smell will appear again, place a saucer with cut raw potatoes, an apple or black crackers in the refrigerator. After a few days they change it to a new one. The bread will last longer, and the potatoes will be replaced more often. But bread helps eliminate only faint odors.
The following are used as sorbents:
- Soda, sugar, bran are poured into a deep cup and placed on the central or all shelves
- Cereals
- Vinegar is poured into a glass and placed on a shelf
- Cosmetic clay
- Mustard powder is used in the same way as soda
- White rice grains are lightly boiled, cooled and placed in the refrigerator in a cup or jar. Lasts for several days

How I cleaned my refrigerator
After that story with our trip to the sea, I have a principle: I leave the refrigerator empty, clean, dry and open. How did I personally manage to remove the smell from the refrigerator after rotten meat? I acted partly on a whim, partly according to advice from the forums. This is how I cleaned up the rotten stuff:
- I treated it with a solution of my favorite Domestos. I left it overnight. She wiped it clean with a wet rag. I soaked the removable parts and washed them in the bathroom. I dried it outside.
- Then I rubbed it again with vodka and lemon juice (see recipe above). She closed the door and left it overnight. I placed glasses of vinegar on the doors - at the top and bottom.
- I ventilated the refrigerator for 3 days. At this stage, the smell began to slowly disappear.
- I washed it again with Domestos. Rubbed it again with vodka and lemon. Finally, our “white friend” began to smell like lemon!
- Dried it. Closed it empty. Connected to the network. I installed an air ionizer for the refrigerator inside. And also activated carbon (10 tablets), soda (1 open pack).
- I left the “white friend” alone for 3 days.
- I made sure the smell was gone.
- Loaded the products.
All! Since then, our refrigerator smells only of cleanliness and my love.
So…
