Which tile cutter to choose: manual or electric

A tile cutter is the most primitive and at the same time necessary tool for working with ceramic tiles and porcelain stoneware. With its help, you can make a cutting line efficiently, easily and relatively quickly. What are the criteria for choosing a tile cutter? – let's look at this issue in more detail.

Principle of operation

Manual tile cutters are mechanical tools.
Their operating principle is similar to a glass cutter. The tools are compact in size and light in weight. They are easy to carry. The material is carved by a protruding roller, which is driven manually using a special handle. It is mounted on a carriage mounted on the tile cutter bed.

Pressing the handle creates a roller load on the material being processed, which leads to its breaking along the cutting line. The horizontal movement of the roller is ensured by a rail mechanism mounted on the frame.

It may consist of:

  • From an I-beam.
  • 2 parallel tubes.

The material to be processed for cutting is placed on the base of the bed, equipped with special shock-absorbing pads. The tile cutter itself must stand on a hard surface while working. During cutting, the roller rubs against the material, causing it to heat up. To cool it and prevent dust formation during operation, tile cutters are equipped with water reservoirs. Some models are equipped with a rotating ruler.

Classification

Tile cutters produced by manufacturers are divided according to their operating principle into:

  • Roller.
  • Bearing.

Roller tools are used for cutting piece tiles at right or arbitrary angles. After securing the tiles to the rubberized base of the bed, a roller with a cutting mechanism under pressure is guided along the cutting line. In professional tools, the cutting mechanism is driven by bearings mounted on guide rails.

Expert opinion

Torsunov Pavel Maksimovich

The use of radial bearing designs significantly increases tool life and improves tool quality and productivity. Each type of tool has its own technical characteristics, including the cutting range. Manual tile cutters can cut material with a thickness of 4 to 20 mm.

Criteria for choosing a tile cutter

Despite the different types of such tools, they all solve the same problem - cutting facing material.

Let's consider the criteria by which tile cutters are selected.

Electric tile cutters

When choosing an electric version of a tile cutter, you need to pay attention to the following criteria:

  1. Electric motor power. The best option is from 800 W, but more is possible.
  2. Disk rotation speed. For a good device it will be from 11 thousand revolutions and above.
  3. Motor placement. This setting may affect the device itself. If the motor is placed at the bottom, the device is more compact in size. If the motor is located at the top, then the device has increased cutting accuracy.
  4. Dimensions of the cutting disc. This parameter determines the size of the furrow. The best option for cutting facing material is an 18 mm disc.
  5. Possibility of cutting at an angle. 45 degrees, 90 degrees - only professional equipment can cut this way.
  6. Build quality. The less vibration, the more accurate the tile cutting will be.
  7. Length and depth of cut. For a good tool, these parameters are 500 and 40 mm, respectively.

When choosing an electric tool, a potential buyer who has taken into account all the criteria can only be advised to avoid purchasing equipment at a discount - this could result in a defect. It’s better to pay a little more, but you can get high-quality equipment.

Electric tile cutters need to be searched according to certain criteria

Manual tile cutters

Let's consider the main criteria that are taken into account when choosing:

CriterionDescription
Frame strengthThe thicker the frame, the more “hardy” it will be. The handle and lever are made of high strength material.
Machine lengthDepending on the tile cutter model, it varies from 100 to 750 mm. You need to take a tool of medium or longer than medium length so that you can work with tiles of any size.
Smoothness of the mechanismThe presence of bearings in the design of the tile cutter will allow the roller to slide across the surface. The more there are, the smoother the move will be.

If you take into account the above criteria, then finding a manual tile cutter will not be difficult.

Important! A manual tile cutter with a protractor will allow you to cut the material at a specific angle.
