Types of filters for hoods

There are different types of built-in filters. Firstly, they are:

  • disposable;
  • reusable.

Disposable filters in the hood are changed as they become dirty. Most often, they use coal as an absorbent. They have a plastic body, some porous material is attached to it, for example, padding polyester. Carbon filters work on the same principle. They need to be changed when they become dirty.

USEFUL INFORMATION: Dimensions of washbasins and sinks in the bathroom

Reusable filters for hoods can be cleaned and returned to their place. They come in steel or aluminum. A mesh material is attached to the body, which can be cleaned with a brush.

Filters are also divided according to the type of substances captured from the air into:

  • Oil-fat, i.e., trapping particles of soot, fat and oil. They are also called coarse filters.
  • Filters for odor elimination or fine cleaning.

Recirculating hoods use both types of filters. In flow-through - oil and fat. Some manufacturers save money and do not always install cleaning systems in this type of hood. However, if the air is not cleaned, oily particles from the stove will eventually settle on the walls of the device, on the fan blades, and on other internal elements. It is extremely difficult to remove dirt from these places, especially if the hood cannot be disassembled. And very soon the device may fail, cease to effectively purify the air, and even break down.

Review of flat hoods

Thin flat hoods for the kitchen

Some types of flat units have an air duct and can operate in two modes: exhaust and recirculation. But most flat hoods do not have a pipe - they do not exhaust air into ventilation, but filter it.

There is a fan inside the device that takes in air, where it is cleaned by a grease and carbon filter and returned to the room. The cleaners have multiple speeds, backlighting and are controlled by push-button switches.

Important. The grease filter is cleaned as it gets dirty, and the carbon filter is changed every 3-6 months.

There are several types of flat hoods:

  1. Visors. Rectangular or square flat structures 15-18 cm high, 50-60 cm wide and up to 50 cm deep. Grease traps are either made of acrylic fabric or metal. Replaceable carbon filters are included in some models, but in others you need to purchase additional ones. A visor made of impact-resistant glass protects the purifier from burning and splashes and promotes better air intake.
  2. Corner hoods are placed above the hob located in the corner. Ducted models operate in both exhaust and recirculation modes. The most common models are 60 and 90 cm wide.
  3. Flat island-type hoods with an air duct are placed above the stove, which stands separately from the rest of the unit, or above the hob on an “island” table. They are presented in three sizes - 60, 90 and 120 cm. Grease traps are metal, it is possible to install a carbon filter. In addition to the main speeds, there is an intensive mode. The principle of operation is removal or recycling.
  4. Built-in models are convenient because you can hide their air duct behind the doors of a wall cabinet. The standard sizes of such hoods are from 40 to 60 cm. In addition to the air duct, the devices are equipped with metal and carbon filters and can operate in exhaust or recirculation mode.

Some built-in models have a retractable panel that comes out of the body during operation - such hoods are called sliders or “telescopes.” When turned off, the built-in telescopic models are almost invisible. The device is built into the cabinet above the stove, and into the countertop directly behind the stove, at right angles to it.

Thin flat hoods for the kitchen

Important. The device, built into the countertop, is placed next to the hob, so the fumes and smell are immediately absorbed by it, without having time to spread throughout the room.

When choosing a hood, you should pay attention to the following characteristics:

  1. Power. The specifications for the hood indicate the room size it is designed for.
  2. Operating mode. Modern hoods can operate in two modes - air exhaust mode, if there is a ventilation hole in the kitchen, and recirculation mode, when the air is not removed from the room, passes through filters and enters the kitchen again.
  3. The dimensions of the device are selected according to the width of the slab. The most common widths are 50, 60 and 90 cm.
  4. The noise level produced by the hood should not exceed 60 dB, otherwise it will be impossible to stay in the kitchen.
  5. Many manufacturers install neon or halogen lamps on equipment.

Hood for a small kitchen - which is better?

You can clean the kitchen from unpleasant odors only with the help of a kitchen hood. The hood in a small kitchen plays the same important role as in any other kitchen. And these days, no kitchen can do without this important kitchen unit.

But if we are talking about choosing a kitchen hood for a small kitchen, then this issue should be approached with the utmost care, because every centimeter counts! Which hood is better for a small kitchen and why we will try to figure it out in this article.

Let us immediately note that almost all major manufacturers of household appliances also produce kitchen hoods. But besides them, there are companies that produce only kitchen hoods. Therefore, on the market you can find both simple and cheap models and ultra-modern kitchen hoods, which are very expensive.

Kitchen hoods come in different types and differ in performance, operating principle, design and, of course, price. When choosing a hood for a small kitchen, first of all, you should pay attention to its design.

By design, hoods are:

  • built-in
  • telescopic
  • hanging
  • fireplace (dome)
  • island

Dome hood

Built-in hood

Hanging hood

Telescopic hood

Island hood

For a small kitchen, the best options are a built-in hood, a telescopic hood, and a hanging hood. These hood designs are the least bulky of all those offered on the market. The most inconspicuous of the three listed designs is the built-in hood .

This hood is practically invisible, so it does not clutter up the interior and, in general, takes up little space.

In second place is a telescopic hood .

This model is also very compact. During operation, a panel slides out of the body of the telescopic hood and is hidden back after the work is completed.

A hanging hood is more bulky and is mounted under a wall cabinet, but this is also not the worst option for a small kitchen.

All these types of hoods are mounted in a wall cabinet above the stove. This method of installation, firstly, does not interfere with the overall design of the kitchen, and secondly, it makes it possible to use the space remaining in the cabinet above the hood for storing kitchen utensils. And when we are talking about a small kitchen, where every centimeter counts, this bonus will come in very handy.

The least preferred hood option for a small kitchen is a dome hood and an island hood. The reason is obvious - they are too bulky, they do not mount in the cabinet and thus you lose useful space above the stove.

For all types of hoods, the working surface corresponds to the standard dimensions of the hob. In general, the width of the hood ranges from 30 to 120 cm, depending on the model. Since the standard slab width is 50-60 cm, the most popular hood width is 50-60 cm.

An important characteristic of a hood is its performance. Therefore, first decide on the volume of your kitchen, and then choose a hood that will be able to pump this volume of air through itself 10 times within an hour.

All kitchen hoods are equipped with a coarse filter that captures grease and large burning particles so that they do not settle in the air duct and ventilation shaft. There are both disposable and reusable filters. The former are made of synthetics, and the latter are made of aluminum. Reusable filters are convenient because they only need to be cleaned periodically and not replaced with new ones. Moreover, they are easy to clean.

In addition, kitchen hoods are also equipped with a thin filter. Most often these are carbon filters that will have to be constantly changed. They capture unpleasant odors and tiny burning particles. If the thin filter is completely clogged with dust, the performance of the hood will drop. Therefore, they need to be changed on time. In this regard, many manufacturers equip their hoods with a filter contamination indicator so that the user knows when to replace it.

There are kitchen hoods with both touch and push-button control panels. The touchpad is the easiest to care for. But fumes and grease settle on the buttons. You can also purchase a hood with a remote control, with which you can turn on the hood from anywhere.

Another bonus of a kitchen hood is that it is equipped with a light source for the work area. Since a small kitchen requires good lighting, additional illumination of the work surface will be a big plus. Most models are equipped with halogen or LED lamps, which are characterized by low energy consumption. Therefore, you should not take outdated models with incandescent lamps.

It is also worth paying attention to the operating modes of kitchen hoods. There are models that can only purify the air. But the greatest demand is for models that not only purify the air, but also remove it from the kitchen. Moreover, to remove air you will need to connect the hood to the ventilation shaft.

In recirculation mode, the hood only purifies the air and does not remove it from the room. Although it is easier to install hoods only with this mode, the filters will have to be changed much more often. And the cleaning will not be as effective as in the air exhaust mode. After all, it is better to fill the kitchen with fresh rather than purified air. Although it makes sense to use recirculation in winter so as not to remove warm air from the home.

How to choose

An important criterion for choosing a hanging hood is that the device matches the interior of the kitchen. Other characteristics are presented in the table:

FiltrationTypically, grease or carbon filters are used for this, or both.
Housing materialHanging hoods can be made of aluminum, plastic, stainless steel, glass.
Embedding widthThe width of the device should be slightly larger than the stove. This will allow you to fully absorb all odors, impurities and fumes.
ControlHere you should choose according to your preferences. It can be touch, button, slider.
Noise levelThis value must not exceed the established standards. It is recommended to choose a device with a noise level of no more than 50 dB.

To calculate the required performance of the device, multiply the area of your kitchen by 12. Thus, you will get the required efficiency of the device.

Pay attention to the additional functions of the suspended hood, which may prove useful during operation. Thanks to the emergency indication, you will always be notified in time about the need to replace the filter. The control panel will allow you to switch the functions of the device even from another room. Using the timer, you can set the time after which the hood will automatically turn off.

Design features and appearance

There are many options for the location and external design of hoods. The following types are distinguished:

  • traditional (classical, hanging);
  • corner;
  • island (ceiling);
  • built-in (telescopic);
  • dome (fireplace);
  • designer.

Which option to choose is up to the buyer himself. However, each type of kitchen air purifier has its own characteristics that need to be taken into account.

Traditional and corner appliances

A traditional hood has a familiar appearance to many. It is even sometimes called classic. Such devices are installed under kitchen cabinets directly above the stove. Most often they are used in recirculation mode. They are equipped with disposable filters that are changed as needed. Some models may be equipped with a corrugated pipe for air exhaust.

USEFUL INFORMATION: Siphon for connecting a dishwasher

Corner hoods belong to the same type. They are simply designed to be mounted in a corner and are shaped accordingly.

Built-in and telescopic hoods

Built-in and telescopic devices are installed in the hanging box itself, which is located above the stove. Such hoods are almost invisible. Telescopic, unlike conventional built-in ones, are equipped with an additional panel that extends when the device is turned on. This increases the area where polluted air is captured. When the hood is switched off, the panel can be removed.

They do not cost much more than conventional built-in units, but they work very efficiently, since multi-layer filters are installed in them, and at the same time they take up less space. They are often flow-through.

Dome type devices

Dome hoods got their name because of their appearance: a dome hangs over the stove, from which a rectangular pipe extends, drawing air from the stove, reminiscent of a chimney near a fireplace. These devices are most often of the flow type, but can also operate in recirculation mode. For fireplace hoods, the dome resembles the top of a fireplace.

Island exhaust devices

Island (or ceiling) appliances are used if the stove is not located against the wall, but in the center of the room. In this case, the hood is attached to the ceiling and is not in contact with the other elements of the island-type kitchen. Equipped with an additional air duct to connect to the main ventilation or vent. Most often it can operate in 2 modes: recirculation and flow.

Designer hoods

Designer products are so called due to their original appearance. As a rule, their design is developed together with the overall interior of the kitchen. Often made to order.
