How to choose and what to pay attention to?
When choosing a sewing machine from any company, you should rely on its functional characteristics necessary for the job, as well as on the price and equipment.
For infrequent use and beginner seamstresses, it is better to give preference to electromechanical machines.
They are not difficult to learn and will provide an opportunity to understand the principle of working with equipment..
Such units usually operate on a swinging shuttle.
More advanced users should pay attention to electronic options with computer control.
They are more expensive, but their functionality is much more extensive compared to electromechanical options.
Predecessors of the Singer sewing machine
Even later, in 1830, the French inventor Berthelemy Thimonnier created and subsequently received a patent for the production of a machine that could already reproduce a chain stitch, and in one easily unraveling thread. Three years later, the first American inventor, Walter Hunt, came up with a device that made it possible to perform more reliable lockstitches. But now they were already two-strand. In addition, he was the first to use a needle, which at its sharp end simultaneously had both an eye and a shuttle device.
11 years later, Elias Howe borrowed Hunt's idea and, improving it, invented a new, stable machine. However, the fabric was fed to it vertically, which led to uneven stitches. Although, even taking into account this defect, the machine was extremely popular.

Singer machine - history in photographs
Does the word “Singer” or the name “Singer” sewing machine mean anything to you? At the beginning of the twentieth century, the name of the Singer sewing machine spoke volumes. After all, it was this easy-to-use sewing machine that was then the dream of housewives around the world and, of course, no less a source of pride for the happy owners of this machine. Mahatma Gandhi said that the Singer sewing machine is “one of the rare useful things invented by mankind.”
The name "Singer" is taken from the name of its inventor, Isaac Singer. Isaac Singer came from a Jewish family. However, it is probably not surprising that it was a Jew who became the inventor of the sewing machine, because at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries there were a lot of tailors among Jews. Isaac Singer was born in 1811 in the small town of Troy, New York. At the age of 12, Isaac ran away from his family to the city of Rochester on the shores of Lake Ontario, where he began to work and study with a mechanic. He then traveled for some time with an acting troupe. And at the age of 20, he got a job as a mechanic at a factory in Boston, where he came up with his first inventions - a woodworking machine and a sawmill. However, commercial success did not come to the inventor.
Singer's success was brought by the improvement of Phelps' sewing machine. Singer's innovation was that he positioned the shuttle horizontally (and the thread stopped getting tangled); proposed a board table for fabric and a needle holder leg (and this made it possible to make a continuous seam); and also equipped the machine with a foot pedal for drive (which made it possible to work with the fabric with two hands). These three innovations became the basic design of the sewing machine for many years. And Singer was made a very rich man.
So in 1851 he created, which began to provide sewing machines not only to housewives, but also to clothing factories. By 1858, Singer already operated four factories in New York State and sold more than 3 thousand sewing machines. Since 1908, the company's headquarters have been located in New York City, in the Singer Building, a skyscraper specially built for them, 47 floors high, which was destroyed in 1968.
An enterprise for the production of Singer sewing machines was also opened in the Russian Empire. In 1902, a plant was opened in Podolsk that produced cars with the Russified Singer logo. This plant operated until the 1917 revolution. And they must have been popular among the women of the Russian Empire.
As for Isaac Singer himself, he didn’t look much like a bespectacled inventor. He was two meters tall, poorly educated, an adventurer by nature and very scandalous in his personal life. Although he took care of all his 22 children from different wives. The last time Isaac Singer officially married the Frenchwoman Isabelle Sommerville, who is believed to have become the prototype for the Statue of Liberty, now located in New York.
Today, Singer Corporation is engaged in the production of space and military equipment, as well as sewing machines, electrical appliances, engines, furniture and other products. And in 2001, the Singer empire celebrated its 150th anniversary.
