Error E22 in Bosch dishwasher

Modern household appliances, including dishwashers (hereinafter also referred to as dishwashers, PMMs), can diagnose themselves. In the event of a malfunction, electronic systems generate error codes for Bosch, Siemens, Electrolux dishwashers and units of other brands. This makes it easier to localize the breakdown and speeds up repairs, even if it is carried out not by a specialist, but by the user.

Without an error code, locating a problem can sometimes be difficult

How code combinations are displayed

Violation codes are shown on the display. In Bosch dishwasher models that do not have displays, the error code is encrypted in the number of blinks of the indicators. The code on the display consists of an alphanumeric sequence.

Many Bosch and Siemens models display the letter E at the beginning (ERROR, translated as an error). Some dishwasher models display F instead of the letter E, followed by a combination of one or two numbers indicating a specific error .

In Bosch models without a display, the error is calculated by blinking indicators

The following cases often arise: the dishwasher shows not one error, but two, highlighting them one by one. There is no contradiction in this: if you look at the decoding of these codes, you will see that they refer to the same part.

Failure code, in which F is indicated instead of the letter E

What does error e22 indicate?

One of the filters is clogged

If such a system code appears on the Bosch dishwasher display, then most likely one of the filters is clogged and therefore the water that should come out through the drain hose remains in the pan. The reason is simple - all the garbage, leftover food on plates and cups has accumulated in the filter mesh and clogged it. Or maybe they linger in the garbage filter and interfere with normal water circulation.

Drain hose problem

If the filters are clean, but the problem is not solved, you should check the drain hose. Another sign that the malfunction is in this particular part of the dishwasher is the alternation of error e22 with e24. Although, according to experts, the alternation of these two codes in only 20% indicates a problem in the drain hose, most often the malfunction occurs in the pump.

Sprinkler impellers are faulty

Various errors will appear on the device display if the operation of the impeller is difficult. Often, specialists fix the breakdown by checking the space between the pump bushing and the impeller. Small particles from food can get there - the reason is easily removable, but sometimes difficult to notice.

Before repairing a Bosch dishwasher, you must disconnect it from the power supply, turn off the tap through which water enters the appliance, and remove all dishes and baskets under them from the device.

Coding of blockages in the drain system

Many malfunctions of Bosch occur due to their improper use - for example, before washing the dishes are not cleared of food residues. In particular, untimely cleaning of filters leads to the stoppage of the PMM operation. The table below shows defect codes, their descriptions and reasons for their occurrence.

Code Description
E07 The drain hole is clogged with food debris. Draining of liquid is prevented by improperly placed dishes or an object covering the hole. Waste water is not pumped out of the chamber
E22 The filters are clogged with food debris. The drain pump does not work because an object is caught in the impeller or it is not rotating. Therefore, the liquid does not drain from the chamber. The error may alternate with code E21
E24 Drain hose is clogged or kinked. The drain may be clogged or the siphon is clogged. Sometimes it alternates with fault code E22 - which means you need to check the pump too
E25 The pipe installed at the pump outlet is clogged, or the place in the drain line where the drainage hose is connected to the PMM outlet is clogged. The pump impeller may not be rotating due to debris if codes E22 and E25 are displayed alternately

These breakdowns are the result of improper maintenance of dishwashers. This is untimely cleaning of filters and unwillingness to clear dishes of food waste before putting them in the dishwasher.

Showing common error E22 on the display

The video demonstrates what actions need to be taken to eliminate the cause of the E25 code appearing on the Bosch PMM display:

Eliminating the causes of the error

It turns out that there are quite a few reasons why error E22 occurs in a Bosch dishwasher, and without delving into the depths of the machine, it is impossible to understand exactly what’s going on. Let’s not “pull the cat by the tail” and begin to step by step check the elements of the dishwasher that could potentially give rise to this system error.

  • First, disconnect the “dishwasher” from the power supply and turn off the water supply tap.
  • Open the door and take out the dish baskets and cutlery trays.
  • We take out the plastic sprinkler from the bottom of the hopper.
  • Unscrew the garbage filter and clean it.
  • Remove the filter mesh and clean it.
  • We unscrew the fastening bolts and pull out the pipe; you also need to check it for blockages.
  • We turn the dishwasher upside down, unscrew the plastic tray holders and begin to pull the tray with the units up.
  • In the middle of the tray there is a large plastic unit with outlets for pipes. It contains a heating element, which would be a good idea to check at the same time. You can read about how this is done in the article replacing the heating element of a dishwasher.
  • There is a pump installed on the side of the heating block; you need to unscrew it after first removing the wires.
  • Check how the impeller rotates and whether there are any foreign objects on it. If the impeller is difficult to rotate, remove the rotor from the bushing and check.
  • We install the pump in place, and then check the drain hose for blockages.
  • After this, the “dishwasher” can be assembled, if you clean all the above elements, error e22 will disappear.

To summarize, we note that, as you can see, eliminating the cause of error e22 is not so difficult; it is much more difficult to correctly identify it. But you shouldn’t be upset, even in the worst case scenario, you can deal with the problem yourself in a maximum of 30 minutes, the main thing is to carefully read the article and follow the advice of experts. And, of course, do not neglect reading the instructions.

Problems in the operation of the filler and drain lines

Problems with water supply arise for various reasons. In addition, not only the breakdowns mentioned above occur in the drain system.

Code Description
E3 Over a certain period of time, water did not accumulate in the required volume. The problem may occur due to weak or no pressure in the water supply. The reasons may also be: a breakdown of the inlet valve, a clogged inlet or flow filter in front of the inlet hose, a malfunction of the water level sensor (hereinafter also referred to as the pressure switch). Sometimes the problem lies in the failure of the Aquastop system
E5 The pressure switch does not give the command to stop supplying water to the PMM tank, although it is already filled to capacity. The cause of the overflow may be a malfunction of the inlet valve or the absence of a command to stop the flow of fluid from the electronic control unit (hereinafter also referred to as the ECU)
E8 or E3 The PMM cannot draw water within the allotted time period. Because of this, further work is impossible - the machine will be stopped by the pump’s failure to operate in circulation mode. A tubular electric heater (hereinafter also referred to as a heating element) will also not heat water
E16 The malfunction is similar to that described for code E5. Only here the main reason for fluid overflow is clogged or damaged inlet valve. There is a possibility that the cause was excessive foam formation due to an overdose of detergent
E17 The inlet valve is not able to completely block the flow of water from the water supply. The reasons may be either a malfunction of the valve or too much water pressure. In the latter case, it must be partially closed with a shut-off valve.
E21 or F The pump has stopped working. At the same time, voltage and control signals from the ECU are supplied to it. Perhaps the cause was a foreign object caught in the impeller. Such consequences result from the lack of lubrication in the rotor bushing and its jamming. The error sometimes appears together with code E22

The reason for the appearance of the E17 inscription may be a water hammer in the water supply system

The listed breakdowns, along with blockages, occur in dishwashers quite often, leading to reset of running washing programs and spontaneous draining of liquid.

To determine the cause, check the intake tract:

  • find out if there is pressure in the water supply;
  • remove the inlet flow filter and clean it if it is clogged;
  • diagnose the intake valve to ensure its performance;
  • Check for debris in the pressure switch tube and remove it, if any.

Error code E3 in a Bosch dishwasher, appearing along with the E8 combination

In the drainage system, you need to check whether the pump is clogged. Sometimes rotor lubrication helps restore its functionality. If the impeller rotates freely, but there is a break in the pump windings (checked with a multimeter), it will have to be replaced.

Problems with draining and filling water

During draining and filling of water, a large number of malfunctions occur. Possible errors of Bosch dishwashers during this process are reflected on the screen with the following block of codes:

1. Code E3 (F3) - lights up on the screen in case of failures with water filling. The executive program includes the time during which the machine is filled with water. If it is not filled within the programmed time, the machine stops.

To identify and eliminate the error, check:

  • presence of water in the water supply;
  • inlet filter condition;
  • serviceability of the intake valve;
  • the serviceability of the sensor that determines the water level.

If the above checks do not produce results, then the functionality of the pump is checked.

2. Code E5 (F5) - appears on the display when the tank is overfilled with water. First of all, this is due to the operation of the sensor that determines the water level.

To identify and eliminate errors, check:

  • condition of the sensor tube for the absence of dirt;
  • serviceability of contacts and supply wires of the sensor;
  • the fill valve is in good working order to ensure there is no blockage due to which the water is not completely shut off.

3. Code E8 (F8) - appears on the display when the water level in the pan is low. If there is a lack of water, the circulation pump stops.

To eliminate the error, use the E3 (F3) code recommendations described earlier.

4. Code E16 (F16) - lights up on the screen when the tank is filled with water unauthorized. Most often this is due to a malfunction of the intake valve. For example, there is a blockage with debris, so it does not completely block the flow of water.

To identify and eliminate the error, check:

  • intake valve condition;
  • serviceability of the sensor that determines the water level;
  • no increased amount of cleaning foam.

5. Code E17 (F17) - appears on the display if there are problems with water supply. First of all, this is due to increased water pressure in the water supply. In this case, the normal operation of the valve that admits water is disrupted.

How to fix the error:

  • if the increase in pressure is due to water hammer, then the dishwasher simply reboots;
  • The water pressure level at the machine inlet is checked. The pressure is reduced by the valve on the riser;
  • The functionality of the flow sensor is checked.

4. Code E21 (F21) - lights up on the screen when the drain pump stops. In this case, control commands are sent to it, but there is no drain.

How to fix the error:

  • the condition of the impeller is checked for jamming;
  • the condition of the bearings and pump rotor is checked;
  • If necessary, replace the worn pump.

Water does not heat up to the required temperature

Defects associated with the water heating function occur in the operation of Bosch PMMs less frequently than previous breakdowns. All of them are associated with incorrect operation of the electric heater.

Code Description
E01 There is a break in the heating element circuit or a violation of its contacts. The reason is that the electric heater burned out. In addition, the following are possible: a break in the cable connections of the circuit, a malfunction of the triac on the ECU board that controls the operation of the heating element
E2 The temperature sensor (hereinafter also referred to as the thermistor) has failed or its connection with the control unit has been broken. The error may appear simultaneously with E01
E09 This error appears only in those Bosch PMM models that have a flow-through heating element built into the pump. The reason is damage to the heater or a violation of the integrity of its circuit
E11 The thermistor turns off due to several reasons: open circuit, lack of supply voltage, or poor contact in the connector or on the ECU board
E12 Too much scale has formed on the surface of the heating element. Often, after rebooting the dishwasher (in order to reset this error), failure code E09 appears

Indication of a malfunction of the electric heater built into the pump

To determine the integrity of the heater and electronic circuits, use a proven method - diagnose them with a multimeter. A working heating element has a resistance of about several tens of ohms. The resistance at the temperature sensor contacts should be within 50 kOhm. If during testing the device shows a break or short circuit, the part must be replaced with a serviceable one.

If E12 is defective, you can get rid of scale on the heater by washing it with a solution of vinegar or citric acid.

Sensor malfunctions

These types of breakdowns are less common than the ones listed above, but you still have to deal with them.

Code Cause
E4 The sensor for switching the flow of liquid to the sprayers and adjusting its pressure is faulty. Therefore, water does not wash the dishes from the spray nozzles. The spray nozzles may be clogged with food debris.
E6 The water quality sensor located next to the heating element is faulty
E14 The sensor, whose task is to control the amount of water entering the dishwasher tank, does not function
E15 The dishwasher has leaked, meaning there is liquid in the pan. This malfunction is possible due to a violation of the seal of the chamber, as well as depressurization at the joints of hoses or pipes. The code appears in PMM models equipped with the Aquastop protective system

Indication of code combination E04

It is better to entrust diagnostics and replacement of sensors to specialists. If the Aquastop system is activated, you can only check the tightness of the joints in the hoses. It is better to look for other damages to specialists.

The Aquastop system sensor has tripped

Now you know the codes for the most common dishwasher breakdowns. You can fix many of them yourself without calling a specialist. This will save time and money.

Fault Diagnosis

This technique is designed to alleviate the grueling routine household work. But at the moment when a malfunction occurs, it is not always easy to diagnose the breakdown. Dishwashers of the Bosch family are equipped with a modern control unit, in which errors are coded. To find out the reason for the violation of flawless operation, all that remains is to decipher the system error code.

A fairly common situation: a Bosch dishwasher is executing a program specified by the consumer, and suddenly, almost just before the end of the process, a warning appears: error e22.

Typically, the first reaction of dishwasher owners is to turn the machine off and on. And often the equipment starts to work, but this is a short-term phenomenon. As a rule, after a short period of time, the problem arises again - when 5-10 minutes remain, the specified program stops, freezes, and then begins to warn with numbers about problems in operation.

Less often, such an error may appear at the beginning and middle of the execution of a given program. If you constantly restart the car, this is unlikely to improve the situation, and, most likely, after 15 minutes the car will freeze again, and then display a new system code on the display indicating a malfunction - error e24.

Restarting the dishwasher program can only help if you need to complete the cycle during which the error occurred. If, after its completion, you do not begin to repair the breakdown and continue to operate the equipment mercilessly, the consequence may be failure of the control unit. And changing it is quite expensive.
