Test of AA and AAA batteries: more expensive does not mean better!

The world has long been accustomed to portable batteries. The operation of the device from batteries made it autonomous, but gave rise to the problem of periodic replacement. The next step was battery-powered, rechargeable devices. The familiar form factor of batteries makes them highly versatile. It is precisely because of the universal demand and ubiquity of rechargeable batteries that any person will sooner or later be faced with the need to choose the best rechargeable batteries.

What types of rechargeable batteries are there?

All manufactured batteries are characterized by several standard parameters that determine the scope of application.
Some of them are modeled after disposable batteries and are designed to replace them. On the other hand, not all batteries can find an equivalent among batteries. For example, most “tablets” like LR44 and the like remained only batteries, since recharging an element of this shape is inconvenient, and a disposable one is already quite cheap.

Among the characteristics by which Rechargeable devices are selected, three main ones can be distinguished:

  • Manufacturing technology.
  • Form factor.
  • Capacity.

Most well-known manufacturers produce different types of products, from which you can choose the set of parameters that suits the consumer.

The best battery manufacturers

When choosing power sources for a camera, buyers do not pay attention to the battery manufacturer, and in vain. Users have long appreciated companies that can be proud of the quality of their products and have long been recognized throughout the world. The best batteries are from the following companies:

  • Duracell, Energizer (USA);
  • Varta (Germany);
  • Panasonic, Sony (Japan);
  • GP (Hong Kong).

To summarize: a digital camera can be powered by an individual battery or AA batteries. In the first case, for long-term operation you need to have a spare power source from the same company as the camera; in the second case, it is better to buy two sets of batteries. This ensures that the owner of digital equipment will shoot without worrying about powering the device.

Technology

Many parameters depend on what physical processes underlie the generation of electric current: sensitivity to environmental conditions, charging speed, the presence of a “memory effect” and others.

The memory effect is a feature that causes batteries to “remember” their operating mode if they are not completely discharged before the next charge. This leads to a drop in capacity, since in subsequent cycles the battery will deliver current only up to the limit fixed by the chemical elements. To avoid memory effect, you need to completely discharge the battery before restoring it.

Nickel-cadmium

These rechargeable batteries were one of the first to appear and for a long time there was no alternative to them. Despite the emergence of other, more advanced systems, they retain their position in devices that require reliable uninterrupted power supply under high load.

The reason for this is a number of advantages:

  • Ability to work under high load.
  • Charge with high current in a short time is allowed.
  • Heat resistance - the batteries themselves hardly heat up when charging due to their low resistance.
  • Possibility of storage in a discharged state.
  • Immunity to low temperatures.

Among the shortcomings are:

  • Harmful impact on the environment.
  • Dear safe disposal.
  • Memory effect.
  • Impressive self-discharge when idle.
  • Inability to use in buffer mode.

The displacement of nickel-cadmium batteries is observed in developed countries, where environmental standards are being tightened.

Expert opinion

Torsunov Pavel Maksimovich

In household use, nickel-cadmium batteries are most often used in photo and video equipment, as well as in radio-controlled models.

Nickel metal hydride

They arose as an attempt to get rid of two main negative parameters of nickel-cadmium batteries - the memory effect and the harmful impact on the environment. It was possible to achieve complete environmental safety of these batteries. They are practically not subject to the memory effect - they can be recharged in any state. A big plus is also the increase in capacity with similar parameters - by about 20%. However, there are some drawbacks: due to the peculiarities of the technology, the service life of nickel-metal hydride batteries is lower than that of competitive options, and their self-discharge is greater than that of competitors.

In 2005, the Eneloop series batteries were presented - the first Ni-Mh LSDs. They combine the advantages of cadmium and old hydride batteries. When left in storage for long periods of time, these innovative batteries lose a significantly smaller percentage of their capacity. And they are less demanding on temperature conditions.

If you need to store Ni-Mh batteries, they need to be fully charged and placed in the refrigerator, preferably in a sealed zip bag against moisture.

Lithium-ion

This type of battery is extremely common in mobile phones, players, smart watches and other gadgets. However, the manufacturer often produces them in the form of AA batteries.

Reasons for the popularity of lithium-ion technology:

  • Extremely low self-discharge current (an idle device retains its charge for months).
  • Large capacity in small size.
  • Ability to work with different currents.
  • The output voltage does not drop, but is maintained until complete discharge.

The main disadvantage of lithium-ion batteries is their sensitivity to changes in current, as well as to complete discharge. Therefore, this type works best in conjunction with electronic controllers and blockers that equalize the input voltage and also automatically turn off the battery when certain values are reached.

Expert opinion

Torsunov Pavel Maksimovich

Lithium-ion batteries are “afraid” of the cold, actively losing charge. They can also catch fire, so be careful when handling them.

What should you know?

Rechargeable batteries are a chemical source of current that is designed to power household devices or electronics. Most often, cylindrical models are produced.

It is important to know that batteries differ from each other not only in size, but also the main difference is the chemical composition, which will suit one equipment and cause a fire in another. Attention is also drawn to this. When buying a compact power supply, you cannot focus only on the form factor, because it only decides whether the battery will fit or not. Whether it will work and for how long, these questions are answered by the composition of the product. It all depends on the manufacturing method, as each device has its own characteristics and disadvantages.

Nickel-cadmium batteries

This type is capable of withstanding repeated discharges and charges. In addition, its high resistance to negative temperatures is noted, and the permissible discharge current is high. Many users note that the main advantage of this option is cost and service life. The main disadvantage is density and rapid self-discharge. Another minus of the battery is the “memory effect”, which reduces the useful capacity several times when the device is not completely discharged. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to bring the charge to zero and then replenish it. Thus, the user will increase the battery life by 2 times. It’s just important to remember that charging must take place from the device that came with the kit; another option can ruin it.

Advantages:

  • Cheapness;
  • Long shelf life when the battery is not charged;
  • Safety.

Flaws:

  • Small capacity;
  • In order for the power supply to work well, it must be completely discharged and charged again.

Nickel metal hydride batteries

This option appeared later than the previous type and is actively used as the main source of energy for compact MP3 players, flashlights, toys, walkie-talkies, etc. (this applies to AA models).

Advantages:

  • The price is almost the same as previous models;
  • Good capacity indicator;
  • There is practically no “memory effect”;
  • Up to 1500 charge cycles;
  • Stable voltage;
  • Does not require special chargers.

Flaws:

  • Storage only when charged;
  • If you do not use the product for 2 years, it will stop functioning.

Lithium-ion batteries

A popular battery option that is used in almost all consumer electronics. In addition, it is used as the main power source in electric cars, as well as phones, laptops, tablets, etc. Lithium-ion batteries are free of the “memory effect”. The downside of these products is their sensitivity to overcharging. Therefore, it is important to install a special limiter that will prevent the battery from failing.

Advantages:

  • High capacity;
  • Does not require maintenance;
  • Good operating current;
  • There is no “memory effect”;
  • Fast charging time is 1 hour.

Flaws:

  • Explosive;
  • High sensitivity to overcharge;
  • Capacity is quickly lost in the cold;
  • Few charging cycles;
  • Over time, the capacity becomes smaller.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries

This model is a subtype of the previous version, the only difference of which is the use of LiFePO4 as a negative electrode. Even if you don’t pay attention to the fact that the only difference is in the cathode, batteries have differences in technical characteristics. characteristics.

  • Operational period up to 15 years;
  • “Smooth” discharge voltage;
  • About 7000 discharge cycles;
  • Works properly at temperatures down to -30 degrees;
  • If disposed of incorrectly, there is little risk of cobalt entering nature;
  • Frost resistance.

Flaws:

  • Not every charger will do;
  • Price.

Lithium polymer batteries

These are perfect versions of Li-Ion batteries. Their advantage is that thanks to the gel-like electrolyte, it is possible to make a thin battery that will not be inferior in functionality to anyone else. This type has become widespread in mobile phones, compact players, power tools and electric cars. It is not recommended to charge products from devices with a faulty or missing controller, because they are sensitive to overcharging. In addition, lithium-polymer batteries should not be used if the seal is broken. In addition to standard batteries, products are used that are capable of delivering current 100 times their capacity.

Advantages:

  • High energy density;
  • It is possible to produce an element with a thickness of 1 mm;
  • Minimum self-discharge;
  • There is practically no “memory effect”;
  • Operating range from -20 to +40 degrees.

Flaws:

  • If handled carelessly, there is a high risk of fire;
  • After two years, up to 20% of the capacity will be lost.

What formats are there?

The final form factor of the battery depends on the device, so some use cylindrical models, while others require prismatic or flat ones. For convenience, manufacturers have equipped some options with convenient markings, thanks to which the user can determine the appropriate size. Also, in addition to digital designations, letter AA/AAA are used, where the latter is the smallest. If everything is clear with the letters, then in order to decipher the numbers, you need to know: the first two digits indicate the diameter (in mm) of the battery, the second two indicate the length, the last indicates the shape. So, for example, when considering the option marked 14500, a person will know that the diameter of the battery is 14 mm, the length is 50 mm, and the element is cylindrical in shape. This will make the purchase much easier.

Form factor

It is the form factor that the batteries inherited from their predecessor batteries.
Typing the sizes and shapes of batteries allows you to conveniently replace them, achieving optimal operating time.

At the moment, the most common standard sizes are considered to be:

  • AA . They are finger-shaped. The production volume of these rechargeable batteries probably exceeds all other batteries combined. Their nominal voltage is 1.2 V, although when freshly charged they can output up to 1.4. The capacity varies widely - from 200 mA to 3000 mA and even more.
  • AAA . Another name is pinky. They differ from the previous version only in smaller sizes. Their use is justified where standard AA simply will not fit or will be too heavy. True, their capacity is smaller - usually up to 1500 mA.
  • C and D. They are similar to ordinary finger ones, but only larger. Accordingly, their capacity is greater. The large size and weight dictate its specific application, where the compact size is not particularly important, for example, music and sound equipment, as well as various automatic systems.
  • PP3 . In Russia, it is traditionally called “Krona”. Unlike a battery, the rechargeable device produces a current of 8.4 V. Many electrical appliances, some remote controls and radio-controlled devices operate on the “Krona”.

There are other sizes of rechargeable batteries, but they are less common.

In order to obtain a battery with greater power, AA or AAA battery packs are used, connected in series. In this case, the battery capacity remains equal to the capacity of one element in the circuit, and the output voltage remains equal to the sum of the unit values. For example, a common battery format for toys and radio-controlled models is 4.8 V, that is, 4 “banks” of 1.2 V each.

Nickel-cadmium batteries

Nickel-cadmium batteries are designated by the Latin letters NiCd and were invented in the mid-20th century in Sweden. The batteries consist of nickel with graphite powder (cathode), cadmium hydroxide (anode) and potassium oxide with the addition of lithium hydroxide (electrolyte). When properly charged and used, they can last up to 900 cycles, otherwise the service life is 100 cycles. Nickel-cadmium batteries can be stored in a discharged state, this will not cause them to deteriorate. Due to their low environmental friendliness, such batteries are used only in devices that have high discharge and charging currents. They need to be charged only in a completely discharged state, so as not to spoil them, and stored, on the contrary, in a discharged state.

Capacity

Are you already using rechargeable batteries?

I've been wanting to try it for a long time

The capacity parameter is equivalent to the time during which the device can be fully powered by the current emitted by the battery. In other words, the larger the capacity, the longer the device can operate on a single charge.

This parameter is measured in milliamp-hours. The range of commercially available values can range from 100 to 12000 mAh. It would seem that choosing the most capacious battery would be the best solution. But in practice everything is not so simple. The larger the battery capacity, the longer it takes to charge. And it’s good if charging with high voltage current is available. But if we are talking about metal hydride elements, which are recommended to be powered with a weak current, the convenience of devices with a large capacity no longer seems so obvious. Consider the energy consumption of the device and its operating mode.

These four 1.2V batteries from Energizer are made using nickel-metal hydride technology that can withstand up to 500-600 charge cycles. With them, cameras, video cameras and other electronic devices will work much longer than with conventional alkaline batteries. According to the principle of operation, they are incredibly simple: there are two poles (plus and minus), through which electricity is supplied to the consumer through an adapter (current receiver). In general, there are no complaints about the build quality of the device and its appearance.

ROBITON AA HR6 Mignon 2500

Robiton AA HR6 batteries are intended for installation in devices with high power consumption, as well as devices with special requirements for reliability and continuous operation. Unlike other power sources, they maintain high output until the charge runs out, which avoids power outages.

The use of alkaline-titanium technology allows batteries to be stored for up to five years at temperatures up to +25 degrees without significant loss of charge. A special valve prevents them from leaking, including during installation upside down. The model is created without the use of heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury and lead. Thanks to this, such a battery does not pollute the environment and does not pose a threat to human health and life.

Such batteries, which are inserted into control panels, radios, toys, measuring instruments and other devices, operate in a standard voltage mode (about 1.2 V), but have a wide range of protection against emergency situations. Due to their alkaline electrolyte, batteries provide long-term power to equipment under various conditions. They work reliably in the temperature range from -15 to +25 degrees. They look quite solid and can compete with other more well-known brands. They perform well at work, no “force majeure” was observed.

Camelion Always Ready AA

Camelion Always Ready rechargeable alkaline batteries are designed specifically for powerful electrical consumers such as radio-controlled toys, video cameras and epilators. However, using them in remote controls is quite reasonable: the charge increased by 70% compared to analogues will help you not think about replacing batteries for several months, or even years.

The presented model of a rechargeable AA battery, which is used in various household and digital devices, has rich functionality and many built-in protections. The batteries are suitable for devices with high power consumption. Compared to salt analogues, this type of battery has a higher electrical capacity. They discharge more slowly and do not lose energy during storage. A set of four elements is enough to ensure long-term operation of, for example, a flashlight, a computer mouse, a photo or video camera. I had no doubts about the quality of the product, and still don’t.
