What is a membrane keyboard?
A classic membrane keyboard consists of a thin silicone or rubber gasket under each key, resembling an inverted cap..
When the key is pressed completely, the cap is “pressed” and closes the circuit of contacts, that is, the key is activated and the signal is transmitted to the computer.
These are the keyboards that are installed on the vast majority of laptops, and the majority of “office” keyboards in the low price range have a membrane switch device.
Other household appliances are also equipped with the same keyboards: multicookers, vacuum cleaners and other devices with “touch” controls.
The advantages of membrane keyboards, in addition to affordable cost, include almost complete noiselessness, the thinnest design possible (no thicker than a regular sheet of paper) and flexibility, even the device can be rolled up.
Among the shortcomings, it is worth noting the absent or extremely weak tactile feedback, which is solved by manufacturers by using a more expensive “scissor” mechanism (mainly on laptops), as well as by adding “sound” effects from pressing.
The main disadvantage of a membrane keyboard is rapid wear and tear and a fairly short service life, which - nevertheless - ranges from 1 to 10 million keystrokes, which - with average intensity - is at least 1-3 years.
Mechanical keyboards.
A mechanical keyboard and the principle of its operation are fundamentally different from a membrane one. If you remove the keycaps (keycaps on which the symbols are printed), you can see the switches. A switch is precisely the mechanism responsible for registering keystrokes on a mechanical keyboard.
The switch itself consists of several components:
- Case - black or transparent, if there is regular or RGB backlighting,
- Stem (with slider) - this part is pressed and opens the contacts inside the switch,
- Contacts - they close and open, there are different designs,
- Spring - returns the stem with the slider to its original position, opening the contacts.
It is when the metal contacts in a mechanical keyboard are closed that a press is registered. This method is more durable than the membrane. It is also worth mentioning that there are several videos of mechanical switches from different companies. They are divided into two types: Cherry-like and others.
Switches (switches) of the “Cherry” type include Cherry, Kailh, Gateron, Outemu themselves. They have the same stem mount for the same keycap mount. All custom keycaps and the vendors that produce them have a cross-shaped mount.
Some gaming peripheral manufacturers release their mechanical keyboards on other switches. The principle of their operation will still be similar to Cherry, but it will be very difficult to find custom keycaps for them.
The implementation of backlighting in mechanical keyboards is fundamentally different from membrane ones: a separate LED is soldered into each switch, which will be responsible for backlighting a separate key. The LED can be located either in the switch itself or on the board.

Many users think in stereotypes about mechanical keyboards, as if they are always expensive, have a high profile and are loud, unlike membrane ones. And all of the above stereotypes have become false, and the most affordable mechanical keyboard can long ago be bought on Aliexpress at a reasonable price.
If you are a fan of low-profile keys, then among mechanics, some vendors have long been producing keyboards with short switch travel. The tactile sensations from pressing will be the same as using a laptop keyboard.
The key in mechanical keyboards registers the press much earlier than in membrane ones, the very feeling of use will be more pleasant, and the service life will be up to 50 times longer. RGB backlighting can be configured for an individual key as you please.
The best manufacturers of mechanical keyboards are considered to be Leopold and Varmilo, these are top Chinese brands; price tags for products vary from 8 to 23 thousand rubles.
In this case, the price justifies the means: the keys are pressed clearly and evenly, without unpleasant clicks or rattling echoes, and most importantly, there is no play (they do not wobble in different directions). Varmilo keyboard switches are well lubricated from the factory and it is extremely pleasant to work with such a device, especially due to the thick PBT plastic (PBT, Poly Butylene Terephthalate) with a rough surface, which does not wear off over time, and also muffles the sound of the keycap hitting the switch.

Razer Cynosa Chroma Black USB
This model has been on the computer peripheral market for more than a year and a half. During this time, it managed to gain popularity among diverse users - programmers, computer game enthusiasts, office workers, and so on. There is an original LED backlight, which provides uniform illumination of both Cyrillic and Latin characters. In addition, even the space between the keys is illuminated, and the backlight itself can be synchronized with any peripheral devices produced by this manufacturer. The design is strict and precise. The case is made of high-quality matte plastic; no fingerprints, dirt or dust will remain on it. The set of keys is standard, a number pad is provided. Even the traditionally large buttons are made only slightly larger here, which has a positive effect on the ergonomics of the model.
The symbols are applied using laser engraving, so they will not be erased even with intensive use of the model. Due to the rubberized feet, the keyboard stands on the surface as stable as possible; it is quite natural that there are feet. There are drainage holes that are great for removing dirt that has accumulated between the buttons. The device is connected to the computer using a regular cable; it does not provide any additional protection. Its length is quite enough to place the device at a considerable distance from the PC.

How to choose and what to pay attention to?
When choosing a membrane keyboard, you should pay attention to the following points:
- purpose of use : for normal office work, a keyboard with a traditional layout, convenient enter and space buttons and a minimal set of function keys is sufficient, but for games or working with specialized programs, you should choose a gaming keyboard with reinforced blocks, backlighting and a lot of additional functionality;
- the nature of the keys' response - it should be clear, understandable and predictable; if there is no tactile response from pressing, it will be inconvenient to use such a keyboard for constant work or play;
- key stroke (pressure depth for the required operation) - here it is worth choosing the minimum value: 2-2.5 mm is considered optimal, but 3-4 mm will not cause much strain on the fingers, it is also worth “touching” the keyboard - pressing the keys usually requires a force that varies from 35-45 g to 60-80 g, and the user himself needs to try the pressing force - for some, “light” pressing is more convenient, while others like a clearer and more intelligible “heavy” pressing;
- if the keyboard will be used for complex games , it should be able to recognize the simultaneous pressing of several keys, but for “office” keyboards this indicator is not important;
- pleasant sensations from the keys - fingers should not slide on the surface, it is better if the surface of the keys is rough;
- ergonomics and strength of the case - these indicators can only be confirmed by long-term use, so if the user did not have such keyboards at his disposal, then one can only be guided by the manufacturer’s description;
- manufacturer - you should give preference to a well-known brand that guarantees the quality and durability of the device.
