Which manual coffee grinder is better to choose?
All manual coffee grinders can be divided into 3 types. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
European
The devices are miniature square-shaped mills with a handle on top. The beans are loaded into a special funnel, the millstones are set in motion by rotating the handle, and fine coffee powder is poured into a small drawer at the bottom of the case. The distance between the discs can be very finely adjusted and the finest grind can be achieved.
European coffee grinders are easily recognized by their characteristic square shape
The advantages of European coffee grinders include their attractive appearance; they can become part of the interior. The devices are easy to clean and wash; they do not need to be handled during operation.
Advice! Although European models are quite stable, you still need to hold them while grinding to prevent the miniature coffee grinder from tipping over.
Eastern
Turkish, Armenian and other coffee grinders are called oriental. They differ from European ones primarily in their elongated cylindrical shape. Grinding of grains also occurs due to the rotation of the handle that drives the millstone. However, the handle of eastern models can be folded or removed. The finished coffee powder is poured into the bottom of the device, and to remove it, you need to remove the lid.
Armenian and Turkish coffee grinders are generally called oriental, but they differ in their cylindrical shape
The advantage of oriental shredders is their compactness. But during the processing of grains, the cylinder must be held in your hands, which is not always convenient.
Without housing
The most modern hand-held shredders, in principle, do not have a housing. They are a special attachment for installation directly on a cup with a funnel and a handle on top. In this case, the ground coffee powder is poured directly into the brewing container. This is convenient, but it cannot be denied that such models look too faded in appearance.
Coffee grinders without a body consist only of a top part with a handle
Blade electric coffee grinder
In such coffee grinders, raw materials are ground using knives mounted on a rod, which break the coffee beans at high speed. The body of the devices is made of plastic (metal models are also produced). Inside the case there is a motor, and in the upper part there is a container for coffee beans. The rotary knife is made in the form of a two-bladed propeller; as a rule, it is made of stainless steel. It is located at the very bottom of the tank and is connected to the motor. The top of the case is covered with a transparent, removable lid. When the beans are ground, the lid is opened and the coffee is poured out of the container. The capacity of knife coffee grinders is usually no more than 120 g.
Rotary models do not have a mechanism for controlling the degree of grinding. Usually it depends on the duration of action of the rotary knives (the longer they rotate, the finer the grinding, but it is unlikely that it will be possible to achieve a uniform degree of grinding).
Power
When rotating at high speed, the knife grinds the grains; the quality of grinding directly depends on the time of its rotation. And the rotation speed is directly dependent on the power of the motor in the coffee grinder, which can be from 80 to 270 W. The optimal power in this case is considered to be 180 W.
If the grinding speed of the beans is too high (and therefore at high power), the beans may become charred and the coffee will acquire a bitter taste.
Advantages and disadvantages
Coffee grinders are equipped with containers for filling coffee, with a volume of 30 to 100 g. This must be taken into account, since on average 6-7 g of ground coffee are used for one cup of drink. It is not recommended to make a large supply, as coffee quickly loses its taste and smell. For example, 30 g is enough for 3 cups of aromatic drink.
The advantages of knife coffee grinders include:
- Relatively low cost.
- Compactness.
- Easy to use.
The disadvantages include:
- Lack of control over grinding degree.
- Uneven grinding of coffee beans.
Coffee of this grind can also be brewed in a Turk. But if you are thinking about which coffee grinder is best to buy for subsequent preparation of a drink in a coffee maker, it is better to opt for millstone models.
How to choose a manual coffee grinder for your home
Although a manual chopper seems to be a very simple device, it is chosen according to certain rules. You need to pay attention to several points.
Millstone
The main element of a manual coffee grinder is the burr discs. Usually one of them is firmly fixed inside the housing, and the second moves and is responsible for grinding. Millstones can be made of cast iron, ceramics or steel, sometimes there are stone elements.
Each option has its own advantages:
- Cast iron grinders are very durable and do not crack, but they can produce tiny chips that get into the coffee, and they also strongly absorb odors.
- Ceramic discs do not wear down for a long time and never rust. But if you accidentally drop the coffee grinder, the millstones will most likely break.
- Titanium-coated steel elements are highly wear-resistant. In terms of efficiency, they are inferior to ceramics, but superior to cast iron.
You need to choose a coffee grinder based on the millstones; they are the most important part of the device.
When choosing a manual coffee grinder, models with steel or ceramic internal elements are considered optimal. They show the best ratio of cost and functionality.
Important! Sometimes you can find models with millstones made of natural stone. This option is the most environmentally friendly and objectively the best, but it is very expensive.
Frame
Manual coffee grinders are divided into types depending on the shape of the body - cubic or cylindrical. Which model to choose depends only on personal taste. However, it should be remembered that Eastern devices are more compact, and European ones look more attractive in design.
European coffee grinders are the most popular, they are stable and beautiful
Handle position
The handle of the device can be located on the side or at the top, and the side option is found only in European models. You need to choose in accordance with personal preferences; before buying a coffee grinder, you should twist the lever and evaluate the degree of convenience.
Most buyers prefer the side position of the handle, which requires less effort.
Availability of grinding adjustment
One of the most important features for a manual coffee grinder is the ability to adjust the grind from coarse to fine. The vast majority of shredders have adjustments, but before purchasing, it makes sense to double-check this point. If it turns out that the device does not support this function, its capabilities will be severely limited.
Housing material
Manual coffee grinders can be ceramic, metal or wooden; there are also budget plastic models. Which device to choose is an aesthetic matter that depends on individual taste. However, shredders made of metal and wood are the strongest, but ceramics, for all their attractiveness, are easy to break.
Volumes
The optimal capacity of a manual coffee grinder is determined by how many people will be using it. For individual use, a volume of 20-30 g will be sufficient; for a large family, it is better to take a device with a grain tank of 100 g.
Attention! The same applies to the volume of the container for the finished powder. It must match the capacity of the upper tank.
Which coffee grinder is better to buy?
According to coffee connoisseurs, a good coffee grinder requires:
- Grind evenly so that the ground coffee particles are the same size,
- Heat the coffee to a minimum. When the beans are heated during grinding, essential oils are released, which should get into the drink and not remain in the coffee grinder.
- Have the ability to adjust the grinding. Different coffee recipes require different degrees of grinding, from very fine (for espresso coffee) to coarse (for brewing in a French press).
The most popular are coffee grinders with grinders - knives (rotary) and millstones, in which coffee is ground using steel or ceramic millstones. Choosing a good coffee grinder depends on your preferences.
Rotary coffee grinders (with blades)
Advantages:
- low price (from 500 rubles),
- In addition to coffee, you can grind any other products - powdered sugar, nuts, etc. By design, this is a small blender.
Flaws:
- uneven grinding. You can grind the beans evenly only very finely by turning on the coffee grinder for a long time - but the coffee gets very hot, and this will have a bad effect on the taste of the drink.
Burr coffee grinders
Advantages:
- uniform high-quality grinding,
- possibility of grinding adjustment,
- does not heat the grains.
A great unit for coffee lovers! But there is also a drawback - their price is higher (from 1500-2000 rubles).
Manual burr coffee grinders
Advantages:
- grinds grains evenly, grinding can be adjusted;
- are relatively inexpensive - from 1000 rubles;
- will decorate any kitchen.
Flaws:
- It will take time and considerable effort to grind the grains.
Therefore, when choosing a coffee grinder, consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type of device. And pay attention to additional functions:
- The pulse mode of operation of the coffee grinder will be necessary if you need to grind particularly hard products. The engine runs with short pauses.
- The manually adjustable dispenser helps to grind a certain amount of coffee.
- Additional functions, such as a tamper or auto-lock when the cover is removed, are not strictly necessary functions, but will make using the device easier.

Electric burr grinder
Unlike blade or rotary models, burr coffee grinders use a different grinding method, namely burrs. The degree of grinding is quite uniform; this coffee is good for use in pressure coffee machines. The body of the millstones is also made of plastic. It contains:
- transparent container for filling coffee beans;
- transparent container for ready-made ground coffee;
- opaque compartment with electric motor.
All parts of the coffee grinder are closed with sealed lids and separated from each other.
The device works simply:
- When you press the power button located on the control panel, the millstones begin to grind grains at high speed.
- The ground particles enter the lower compartment intended for them, from where they can be collected into the cup.
The mechanism of burr electric coffee grinders consists of two disks (millstones) that grind coffee beans. The grind size can be adjusted independently, and it depends on the distance between these two disks.
Ground coffee prepared in a burr grinder can be brewed in any coffee makers and coffee machines.
These models have a larger capacity than knife models - up to 300 g of coffee beans. The devices have about 15 modes for grinding grains, i.e. The resulting ground coffee is quite homogeneous.
Advantages of millstones:
- Using a special program, you can dose the amount of grinding.
- Their cost is of course higher, but it is compensated by the presence of additional useful functions.

The Best Electric Rotary Coffee Grinders
Let's consider the first category in our rating of the simplest type of coffee grinders - rotary. The principle of grinding here is the rapid (+/- 3000 rpm) rotation of a specially two- or four-sided knife, which breaks and crushes the grains to the smallest fractions.
Blenders work in a similar way. The degree of grinding in such devices is controlled by processing time in combination with visual observation of the contents of the chamber through a transparent lid.
The uniformity of grinding in rotary coffee grinders is mostly imperfect, but they are much cheaper in weight than millstones. From the widest market offer, our experts have identified the following models: Bosch MKM 6000 (6003), Mikma EKMU IP-30, De'Longhi KG 49, ProfiCook PC-KSW 1021 and Caso Coffee Flavor.
Bosch MKM 6000/6003
German Bosch coffee grinders models MKM 6000 and 6003 are manufactured at Bosch’s own production facilities in Slovenia. This is a compact device made in a cylindrical form factor typical for such coffee grinders. Power consumption – 180 W. Available in two colors: white – series 6000 and black – series 6003.
The capacity of the bowl for grains is 75 g. The bottom of the bowl is inclined - thanks to this, it is possible to avoid the sticking of large fractions on the walls of the bowl and lid, thereby achieving maximum grinding uniformity.
For the same reason, there is no need to shake the coffee grinder during operation - in devices with a flat bottom this must be done constantly.
The coffee grinder can only operate with the lid completely closed - only in this position is it possible to press the power button. This solution is not liked by all users, since the button and, accordingly, the lid must be held by hand all the time.
The knives in the Bosch MKM 6000/6003 are made of stainless steel, but the seat is plastic, and according to numerous reviews, this is one of the weakest points of this model. The shortcoming is compensated by a 24-month warranty from the manufacturer.
