Which water filter is better with reverse osmosis: Top rating of filters

Geyser Prestige

Geyser Prestige is a classic model of a household reverse osmosis system with a storage tank. When I say “classic”, I mean the interchangeability of filter cartridges. You can easily select SL10″ and InLine filter elements from other manufacturers for such equipment.

Geyser Prestige - the most common reverse osmosis in the CIS

Available in 4 modifications: simple, with a mineralizer (M), with a pump (P), with a pump and mineralizer (PM). This approach allows us to cover most of the customer's needs. The basic model operates at a pressure of 3 atmospheres, the version with a pump – from 2.

By default it is equipped with a tank with a usable volume of 7 liters. If desired, it can be replaced with a more compact one, 5 or even 2 liters. The filter is installed under the sink, so sometimes the size of the tank is critical.

The base membrane (1812-50 GPD) produces up to 190 l/day. It can subsequently be replaced by increasing productivity to 285 (1812-75 GPD) or 380 (1812-100 GPD) l/day.

The best in-line reverse osmosis water filters

This type of filter with a reverse osmosis unit is installed in the main line, so all subsequent water is purified. It is practical to obtain drinking water at all tapping points. The units are used both at home and for industrial purposes and catering establishments, but the cost of such devices is much higher.

RAIFIL RO588W 220 EZ five-speed

Rating: 4.9

The favorite in the category is a product from the South Korean company Raifil, which is equipped with two water pumps operating from a 220 V network. This equipment provides accelerated pumping and reverse osmosis filtration with a capacity of up to 1420 l/day. In practice, this means obtaining up to 1 liter per minute. The system consists of 5 stages, including a polypropylene cartridge, two filled with compressed carbon and one granulated. To monitor the operation of the powerful device, an analog pressure gauge is provided on the body, displaying pressure up to 20 atm. According to reviews, this cleaner has proven itself well for preparing soft drinks in bars.

The filter attracted the attention of experts with its resource. Unlike household models, which are capable of high-quality water purification by reverse osmosis up to 5,000 liters, this installation is designed to pass 60,000 liters through itself. The station is also notable for the presence of five reverse osmosis membranes at once, which increases the degree of liquid purification several times.

Geyser Prestige Maxi 1500

Rating: 4.8

The domestic one has another main system with carbon filters and reverse osmosis. The Maxi 1500 installation is capable of filtering up to 1.04 l/min, which is 1500 l in daily equivalent, therefore it is ahead of the device from the South Korean manufacturer. The kit is supplied in a single case, where all cartridges, including the reverse osmosis module, are fixed in a frame. The block is made with its own support legs and is easily connected to the main line. The filter dimensions are 43x86x27 cm and it weighs 25 kg.

We recommend this product for use in catering establishments or the production of bottled water, since when counting consumables, the cost of 1 liter is 30 kopecks. The cost of the installation itself is also 15,000 rubles cheaper than its South Korean counterpart with equal characteristics.

Atoll A-550 STD (A-560E)

Another classic, but made of the best plastic and on a steel frame. It also differs from its analogues in that American Pentek filter elements are used as pre-filters. This is, in a way, a sign of quality, because the cartridges of this brand are considered one of the best.

Atoll 550 is famous for using American cartridges

In addition to the standard model, there are modifications with a pump (A-550p) and a mineralizer (A-550m).

The membrane is a proprietary element 1812-50 with a nominal capacity of 120 liters per day from DOW Chemical. The system is equipped with one large tank with a useful volume of 12 liters. Due to its massive size, I recommend this model to those who have enough space under the sink, or do not plan to use it for anything else.

Aquaphor DWM-101s Morion

Aquaphor offers an interesting technical solution. DWM-101s Morion combines the use of disposable modules, a water-water tank and sophisticated automation. The design has only 4 cartridges, and the last one works as a post-filter and mineralizer. All of them are vendor lock-in, i.e. replacement only with products from Aquaphor.

Aquaphor Morion - for those who appreciate non-standard products

With a major focus on ease of maintenance, all cartridges can be replaced within 1 minute without the use of tools. The presence of a 5-liter water-water tank is designed to ensure the system operates at a pressure of 2 atmospheres, while most other reverse osmosis filters operate at 3 atmospheres. and higher. The tank is already built into the body, so the model is compact: 371x190x420 mm. A sophisticated mechanical automation system is responsible for smooth operation, so you always need to be prepared for surprises on its part.

It's important not to get confused. Until 2015, Aquaphor produced DWM-101 systems. This is exactly what is shown in the next video.

The only difference from the current version is the design of the membrane block. In the old K50 module, the drainage was diverted through a separate hole at the bottom. The appearance was spoiled by the “extra” tube. Now the filter is equipped with a K50S module with a corresponding mounting socket. Therefore, membranes from the old model do not fit the new ones, and vice versa.

Barrier Profi Osmo 100

Don’t be surprised, but we have another standard model – now from Barrier. The latest current line of Profi Osmo with an index of 100, which indicates the use of a membrane with a capacity of up to 380 liters per day (100 gallons) as the default filter element. Those. where 1812-50 is usually installed, here 1812-100. The performance gain is approximately 2 times.

The model is available in versions with a pump (Boost), a mineralizer (M), and both (Boost M). All elements are attached to a durable steel frame.

Classic reverse osmosis model Barrier Profi Osmo

The storage tank holds up to 4-5 liters of purified water. The useful volume, as in other systems of this type, directly depends on the pressure in the water supply: the higher, the better the potential of the capacity is realized.

Watch a short video about installing Barrier Profi Osmo to get an idea of this filter.

Three second roles of reverse osmosis systems - Atoll, New Water, Barrier

Atol

Atoll water filter with reverse osmosis

Atoll water purification filters burst onto the market not so long ago, but today they occupy a leading position, and all thanks to the successful combination of quality and cost of the devices themselves. Model A-590 E guarantees fairly high productivity, up to ten liters per hour. But this model has another drawback. It is quite cumbersome, because... It only has three prefilters. Atoll wins the competition in terms of cost with imported devices, but sometimes loses when competing with domestic analogues.

The use of the Atoll reverse osmosis system is limited by the operating pressure in the water supply; it should vary within 3-8 atmospheres. If the pressure suddenly increases, the system will easily fail. For insurance, you will need to install a pressure reducing valve, but this is also a minus, because... these are additional costs. Low pressure in the pipes will cause the system to run half-idle, and accumulation may not occur at all. For this purpose, they developed a system with a pump, but in this case the cost of the device went up again.

Therefore, Atoll today is the weakest of the three, New Water is literally stepping on its heels with its abundance of new products, and Atoll may soon lose its position.

Barrier

Reverse osmosis filter Barrier 100 Profi

The Barrier filter, another representative of the TOP-5 rating of reverse osmosis systems, promises water that is not inferior in quality to bottled water. It claims to have an average number of cleaning steps - only four. The first stage of cleaning is polypropylene fibers that hold the mechanics. The second stage is the elimination of organic matter using a sorption filter. Coconut charcoal works here, as in many analogues. The third stage itself is reverse osmosis. The main material for it is composite polyamide, ultra-thin. All pollutants with such a membrane are removed through drainage. And the fourth stage is the restoration of minerals in the form of conditioning. In addition, activated carbon is processed in the installation with silver to eliminate unnecessary odors and tastes. Everything here is middle class, but well done. The membrane of the Barrier Osmo 100 reverse osmosis filter will have to be changed once every year and a half, and a mechanic once a year. No unique fillers or membranes. Everything that has proven itself on the market in one complex.

Geyser Allegro

Allegro is a continuation of the successful Prestige line, but with some modifications. The manufacturer has focused on reducing the number of connections, which, logically, should reduce the risk of potential leaks. Therefore, the collector to which the prefilter flasks are attached is cast and made of plastic. There are versions on sale with a pump, a mineralizer, and the most complete one – with everything together. The kit includes a tank for 5-7 liters of purified water.

Geyser Allegro - development of the Prestige line

Previously, this model stood out with a transparent storage tank. There was a removable bag inside, allowing it to be changed as needed when microbial growth on its inner walls became apparent. But Geyser refused such a decision. Apparently something went wrong. For example, due to daylight, more germs developed inside than in a regular tank. Watch the video and you will understand what it looked like originally.

New water Expert Osmos MO530

This model will appeal to those who value compactness. The thickness of the main unit of the Expert Osmos MO530 filter is only 8.5 cm. It can be placed not only under the sink, but also above it or somewhere on the countertop. At the same time, it contains full 4 stages of purification with reverse osmosis and mineralization. All InLine cartridges can be changed in minutes. If necessary, they can be replaced with analogues from other manufacturers. A separate storage tank holds up to 7 liters of purified water.

Compact model of reverse osmosis system MO530 from Novaya Voda

As you will see from the video below, the MO530 used to come with a transparent storage tank. For the same reasons as in the case of Geyser Allegro, it was abandoned.

10+. Aquaphor OSMO 50 version 5

photo Aquaphor OSMO 50 version 5

This model quite effectively softens water and removes turbidity. During manufacturing, an original semi-permeable membrane is installed in the filter, which is supplemented with special carbon modules. This allows you to remove from the water all dangerous impurities whose size is at least 0.0005 microns - these include chlorine compounds, rust, pesticides, nitrates, and heavy metals. Purified water acquires a pleasant taste, becomes beneficial for the body, and can even be used for preparing baby food. The design includes a storage tank with a capacity of about 10 liters and a carbon post-filter.

Can be used exclusively for purifying cold water - its inlet temperature should not exceed +30 degrees. The device takes up little space, so it can easily fit under the sink. A separate tap comes from it; about 1.3 liters of water can pass through the filter per minute. The filter has four levels of purification: coarse, medium, fine and purification from chemical compounds.

Advantages:

  • Very easy to install - you just need to connect it to the water supply system;
  • High quality of output water;
  • Significant work resource;
  • Compact overall dimensions.

Flaws:

  • Water passes through it quite noisily;
  • Not too high filtration speed;
  • The location of the tap is not very convenient; you have to reach for it.

This model is a rather original design with a high-pressure pump. Osmosis has three stages of water purification. At the first stage, the water flow passes through a special cartridge made of foamed polypropylene with a cell size of 5 microns. It will trap any insoluble particles in the water. At the second stage, the water enters a carbon block made from coconut activated carbon, which neutralizes chlorine compounds and organic substances harmful to the human body. With its help, the taste and smell of water improves. In the third stage, the water passes through a SBC cartridge, also made from compressed carbon carbon, which removes residual chlorine and other chemicals from the water.

There is a storage tank with a capacity of 12 liters, which allows you to always have a small supply of clean water. The design includes a mineralizer that restores the most suitable chemical composition of moisture for the human body.

Advantages:

  • Excellent water quality;
  • The presence of a small reservoir;
  • Filter reliability.

Flaws:

  • The filter cover is not very reliable - there is a possibility of flooding;
  • Due to the small size of the filters, they clog within a matter of weeks;
  • The membrane body is also not very durable.

Geyser Prestige PM

Atoll A-550 STD

Atoll A-550 STD photo

This model is distinguished by excellent workmanship - it has a durable and dense plastic case, equipped with several stiffening ribs that make the design quite reliable. Immediately after connecting this filter, the water can be consumed as food; it will not have any foreign odors or tastes. It looks quite attractive. The ball valve rotates smoothly and softly.

The first stage of purification is located immediately at the water inlet. The cartridge here is quite dense and hard. In the second stage, the water passes through the carbon segment, which can be replaced if necessary. Water enters here through a special distributor, ensuring its uniform infiltration. One such cartridge is enough to completely rid about 19 tons of water from chlorine. At the third stage there is a cartridge that prevents chemical residues from entering the tap; it is quite rigid, so there is no chance of it deforming during use.

Advantages:

  • Allows you to obtain a large volume of clean water per unit of time;
  • Standard shape with reinforced body;
  • The ball valve is ceramic and is durable.

Flaws:

  • High price;
  • Not available in all stores;
  • Oversized design, will not fit under every sink.

Barrier EXPERT Standard

Barrier EXPERT Standard photo

This is one of the best household filters produced using osmosis technology. Perfect for purifying tap water from any mechanical impurities and chemicals. It uses multi-stage filtration technology, which has proven itself in many similar designs. This system has three main modules: mechanical purification of water from various contaminants, with its help it is possible to get rid of sand, rust and other large and small particles. The second module saturates the water with useful ions and removes chlorine, lead and copper compounds from it. The third uses PostCarbon, which removes organic substances from the composition.

This filter can be installed either under the sink or directly on it. The kit includes everything you need to get started; you don’t have to purchase anything additional. It can be used around the clock. The connection is quite simple - anyone can handle it. In order for the filter to start working fully, the first ten liters of water must be drained, only after that it can be used for its intended purpose. All cartridges are replaceable; they will have to be replaced as they become dirty.

Advantages:

  • Convenient to change consumables;
  • For a filter of this type, the cost is quite reasonable.;
  • Beautiful appearance, allowing this design to be used also in a sink.

Flaws:

  • You should very carefully monitor the condition of the filter elements, otherwise there will be a very high proportion of contaminants in the water passing through them;
  • Sometimes it does not cope with its task, maintaining water hardness at the same level.

Geyser Nanotek

Geyser Nanotek photo

This is one of the best osmosis filters designed for installation under the sink. It takes up quite a lot of free usable space due to the presence of a spacious water tank with a volume of about 20 liters. This model filters water efficiently through a five-stage purification system and is designed for direct connection to the water supply. With its help, you can significantly reduce the concentration of iron, reduce hardness and completely get rid of chlorine.

The smart system allows beneficial minerals to pass through and retains those that can have a harmful effect on the human body. If you use this system correctly and change cartridges as needed, you will be able to drink absolutely clean water for a long time without any toxic impurities. The design's productivity is about one and a half liters per minute, which is quite enough for cooking.

Advantages:

  • Very soft water without foreign impurities;
  • Quite good assembly of the entire structure, reliable protection against any leaks;
  • It's quite easy to connect.

Flaws:

  • Most likely, you will have to purchase a pressure gauge to measure the water pressure in the water supply system (if it is below three atmospheres, the filter simply will not be able to function);
  • High price;
  • It's not easy to find replacement cartridges.

Aquaphor Crystal Eco

Aquaphor Crystal Eco photo

This design is very easy to install; the installation method is no different from connecting an ordinary kitchen faucet. However, you will have to be quite careful here, since the connecting pipes going to and from the manifold block must be connected in the correct position. Be sure to remove the filter cover. After connecting all the modules, they will have to be washed with tap water for some time so that all filter elements begin to function normally. This design belongs to ionic cleaning systems, does not take up much space under the sink, and copes well with both mechanical and chemical pollution.

If necessary, you can install an additional water softening module, but you will have to purchase it separately. The manufacturer recommends changing filter cartridges approximately once a year, and the softening element even more often, approximately every seven to eight months. The design can be considered universal, since there are quite a few types of filter elements.

Advantages:

  • Three standard modules included, additional elements can be installed;
  • The housing of all filters is plastic, equipped with stiffening ribs;
  • Very easy to install and operate.

Flaws:

  • As the cartridge wears out, the taste of the water may change;
  • Gradually, the filters become clogged, causing the yield of filtered water to decrease;
  • The locking mechanism in the faucet may leak, which can damage the sink.

Aquaphor Crystal Eco

Aquaphor Morion M

Aquaphor Morion M photo

This is one of the best models of water filters for washing, which works using reverse osmosis technology. If desired, the device can be installed not only under the sink itself, but also on it or in close proximity. This filter looks very stylish. The design of the cartridges is made according to the block-modular type. Their body additionally has stiffening ribs. The storage tank is built-in and has a small volume, so the dimensions of the filter are quite acceptable.

Other designs will function only with a sufficiently high water pressure in the central system; this filter is also tied to pressure, but here only one and a half atmospheres is enough. In addition, this moment allows you to significantly save water. The useful volume of the built-in tank is 5 liters of purified water. The output reaches one and a half to two liters per minute.

Advantages:

  • Produces water with average hardness;
  • There are no foreign odors or unnecessary impurities;
  • There is no scale formation in the kettle.

Flaws:

  • High price of replacement elements;
  • Quite noisy during operation;
  • In general, the level of durability leaves much to be desired.

Barrier EXPERT Hard

Barrier EXPERT Hard photo

This model rightfully takes fourth place in our review of the best water filters of this year. We put it in third place, largely due to the finest mechanical cleaning among other models - the filters remove particles as small as 5 microns from water. During the manufacturing process of the design, a special Smart Lock technology was used, which allows the filter to remain in place even under strong water pressure. In addition, the byPass technique is used, which can significantly extend the life of the filter element - it will have to be changed less often, and this will also be a good preventive measure against softening the passing water too much. This filter is intended exclusively for central water supply.

The filter comes with everything you need for proper installation. Maximum productivity can reach 2 liters per minute. Moreover, due to the tap at the inlet to the filter, this figure can be reduced. The resource of one cartridge is 10 thousand liters, after which it will need to be changed. The maximum inlet pressure should be no more than 7 atmospheres.

Advantages:

  • Long service life of cartridges;
  • Cartridges are very easy to change;
  • Softens and purifies water very well;
  • The water becomes tasty and harmless to health.

Novaya Voda Expert Osmos MO530 photo

This model is one of the newest on the market today. It belongs to the premium class, which is why it is quite expensive. Its beneficial qualities are at a very high level - with the help of this filter you can get rid of 99.9% of harmful impurities. The design easily removes particles up to 5 microns in size, removes organic compounds, pesticides, herbicides and other harmful compounds.

Here, four types of cartridges are used for cleaning: a standard one, designed for mechanical cleaning, which removes suspended matter of various substances from the water. Next is a carbon filter, which is made from activated coconut carbon. At the next stage there is a reverse osmosis membrane made in Japan; it is much more effective than similar parts in the models presented above. After it there is another carbon filter, which contains activated carbon in granules, as well as minerals that enrich the water with useful microelements and minerals. The filter elements are durable - they can last about 2-3 years without the need for replacement.

Advantages:

  • For a reverse osmosis system it takes up really little space;
  • High build quality;
  • Durability;
  • Long cartridge life.

Flaws:

  • Price.

ICAR

Water filter Ikar

The ICAR filter is currently recognized as the best filter for water purification. It produces superior quality water. This filter not only purifies water in the best possible way, but also improves its performance. The output is mineralized “living” water with a negative ORP. The IKAR filter consists of two main components: a reverse osmosis filter (premium - 5 stages of filtration), an IKAR module (water ionizer and mineralizer). It is possible to additionally connect an IKAR ph reactor to the installation, which increases the pH. The operation of the installation is automated and has a microprocessor control unit for monitoring water parameters and the quality of its purification.

The ICAR filter is installed under the kitchen sink. Despite the high cost of installation compared to other filters, the cost of water, which is comparable to water from Lake Baikal in its characteristics, is 2 rubles. per liter The filters have been commercially available for sale since 1997. The installation has received several prestigious international awards. The largest official dealer of ICAR water purification plants is home-spring.rf (free delivery throughout Russia, installation service).

Advantages:

Geyser Prestige 2

If your filter requirements are ultra-compact and affordable, then Geyser Prestige 2 is one of the few options. There will be a sacrifice in performance because the base 2-speed model comes without a tank. There is a modification with a 2-liter water tank and a post-filter.

Direct-flow reverse osmosis filter Geyser Prestige 2

The base model is equipped with a 100 gallon membrane. It is this that allows this reverse osmosis to be used as direct-flow osmosis. Depending on the pressure, the filter can deliver up to 200 ml per minute. This is not very convenient, but in some cases it is a good option.

The following video provides a short overview of the modification with a tank.

To be fair, I note that anyone can assemble such a system “on their knees” from components from any manufacturer. You just need an InLine cartridge with activated carbon (if the water is chlorinated) or polypropylene foam (if not chlorinated), a housing with a membrane, a plastic liner, a tap, a drain clamp and a tee tap. By the way, in this case you can even install a membrane with a higher capacity, up to 400 gallons. It will cost more, but the cleaning speed will increase 4 times.

The best water filters for sinks with reverse osmosis

It's time to look at specific models selected by experts. Perhaps among them you will find exactly the one that suits the needs of your family, and you won’t have to look for others. First, we offer 6 filters for the sink, which will ensure the cleanliness of the flow entering the kitchen.

Aquaphor DWM 201 four-stage

Rating: 4.9

Experts gave first place in the review to the domestic development from Aquaphor, which has four stages of purification. In addition to reverse osmosis, the installation has a block with coal, a mineralizer, and a flask that retains free chlorine and iron. The filter is made in a single block, where a water pump is already provided to increase the pressure. The storage capacity allows you to have a reserve of 5 liters. The throughput of the system is 250 ml per minute, but the low figure is due to the increased quality of cleaning, since the porosity of the membrane is 3 microns. According to reviews, owners connect the filter not only to the sink, but use it to directly supply water to the coffee machine (there is a special outlet).

The filter with reverse osmosis technology is notable for its intelligent control system that monitors the throughput. Each cleaning stage has its own indicator notifying about the resource. When one of the elements approaches the end of its service life, the filter beeps. All this will help you not to miss replacing components and always have clean water.

Prio New water Expert Osmos Stream MOD600

Rating: 4.8

A filter with a reverse osmosis system operates using flow technology, without placing liquid in a storage tank. The throughput of the installation is 1.25 liters per minute. This is partly due to the slightly increased porosity of the reverse osmosis membrane - 5 microns. In total, the model has 4 cleaning stages. There is also a pump that compensates for low pressure from the water supply. The post-filter is made in a combined form and simultaneously removes remaining contaminants and also mineralizes the composition.

If you don’t have any space under the sink, we recommend installing this filter. Its dimensions are only 34x37x12 cm. The low pressure pump is also made with a flat body 31x22x12 cm and can be attached next to or on the opposite side under the sink. Thin blocks can be easily placed on one of the walls of the cabinet, leaving space for a waste shredder and other devices. This model also has one of the highest productivity among household appliances - 1.25 l/min.

Geyser Prestige M (12 l) six-speed

Rating: 4.7

Another domestic brand offers a reverse osmosis filter at a more affordable price than its competitors. At the same time, the system is distinguished by 6-stage cleaning. In addition to the reverse osmosis membrane, there are two carbon blocks filled with coconut activated carbon, a sediment cartridge, a carbon post-filter and a mineralizer. The service life of the replacement elements is 12 months, and the porous membrane will last from 1 to 3 years, depending on the water quality in the region. The two-position tap provides the supply of both simply purified water and saturated with minerals. The filter throughput is only 130 ml per minute, but this is due to the porosity of the reverse osmosis partition of 1 micron. If the water at the inlet is heavily contaminated, the second stage can be replaced with an ion exchange unit.

The filter features one of the largest storage tanks - 12 liters. This is relevant for a large family of 4-6 people or a cafe to cook food using water purified by reverse osmosis.

Atoll A-550m STD five-speed

Rating: 4.7

The filter has five stages, consisting of: a coarse filter cartridge that retains fractions over 5 microns, a coconut module, a polypropylene flask, reverse osmosis, and a post-filter. If desired, the kit can be equipped with a mineralizer with automatic acidity adjustment. The inlet liquid temperature is allowed from 4 to 38 degrees, and the pressure should not be lower than 2.8 atm.

This is another filter with a storage capacity of 12 liters, which is suitable for a large family. The product is slightly inferior to the competitor described above, since the reverse osmosis system itself will have to be changed every six months. But the quality of cleaning remains high thanks to the porosity of the membrane of 1 micron and the similar porosity of the polypropylene filter. Research shows that the parts per million remaining in tap water is around 400 ppm. Bottled water has a reading of up to 150 ppm. After running the liquid through the Atoll A-550m STD, the residue will be 35-50 ppm.

BARRIER PROFI Osmo 100 five-stage

Rating: 4.7

Here is another worthy contender for the title of best reverse osmosis filter. The kit performs five-stage cleaning with coarse filtration (retains rust from pipes, sand, algae). The stream then passes through activated carbon, which absorbs chlorine and other solutes. After this, fine cleaning occurs and the liquid enters the capsule with reverse osmosis. At the exit, the water is re-treated with carbon to eliminate the taste, even if it has been sitting in the storage tank for a long time. Reviews show that no deposits form in the kettle when using such water.

The main advantage of the filter is its price, compared to the cost of similar products with equal characteristics. For an amount of about 7,000 rubles, you get 5 stages of cleaning and the ability to accumulate reserves in an 8-liter container. Another distinguishing factor is the estimated service life of the reverse osmosis unit up to 5000 l. If a family of two people consumes an average of 1200 liters per year for drinking and cooking, then such a filter will last for 4 years, which also promises savings.

Aquaphor OSMO-Crystal 100 version 4 four-stage

Rating: 4.6

The category is completed by products from Aquaphor with 4-stage purification, including reverse osmosis. The filter capacity is 260 ml per minute. Purified water is stored in an 8 liter container. The kit already includes a chrome-plated faucet. The service life of the membrane with water of average quality reaches 1.5 years. In addition to filtration, the installation performs liquid conditioning, saturating it with magnesium. The manufacturer claims that the mineral is perfectly absorbed by the body through water and helps improve sleep and mood.

The kit with a reverse osmosis module is notable for its ability to replace 3 stages of cleaning in one touch. For this purpose, each capsule is secured through latches. To disconnect the block, just press the tab at the top. Installing a new one occurs simply by lifting the capsule until it clicks. This requires no tools and takes about 60 seconds (if completely replacing all cartridges at once).

Econic Osmos Stream

New water loves modular cartridges, which can be seen from the abundance of models of systems with inLine filter elements. They are easy to change, and if necessary, it is not a problem to replace them with analogues from other manufacturers. But in the Econic Osmos Stream system there was also a place for a special component in the form of a high-performance membrane of Japanese origin. It is capable of delivering up to 0.9 l/min at a water supply pressure of 5 atm, and at 8 atm. – all 1.5 l/min. The membrane cleans water so well that the concentrate and permeate are approximately the same. This is very cool!

Direct-flow reverse osmosis system New water Econic Osmos Stream

In addition to the basic model OD310, there is OD320 - with a mineralizer and OD360 - with a pump and mineralizer. All of them are direct-flow, providing high quality cleaning at an enviable speed. The only thing is that the membrane for such systems costs almost the same as the entire kit.

Aquaphor DWM-31

DWM-31 combines the advantages of classic systems with a tank and direct-flow filters. The main advantage of this model is the use of a storage tank without internal pressure chambers and other things. Thanks to the included cut-off device, you can use 5-20 liter bottles. But for convenience, the kit includes a neat jug with a usable volume of 2.5 liters. It can always be washed, which eliminates the need for post-filters. Plus it saves space under the sink. Plus you can put it in the refrigerator. Plus there is a conditioning module with healthy salts.

An interesting filter model with reverse osmosis and a jug instead of a storage tank - Aquaphor DWM-31

What about the cons? Vendor lock-in, as always. Aquaphor cartridges are suitable here, and nothing more. See how it works in a visual video from the manufacturer.

Blog – Reverse osmosis filter – we’ll tell you how it works and help you choose

What is reverse osmosis

The phenomenon of osmosis is not a human invention; it is used to carry out water exchange in all living organisms. Direct or natural osmosis is the process of spontaneous passage of a solvent (usually water) through a semi-permeable membrane towards the solution. This is how plants draw water from the soil. The salt content in plant roots is much higher than in the water contained in the soil. Under the influence of osmotic pressure, water penetrates into the plant. The cells of our body receive water in a similar way. The cell membrane is a membrane through which water and nutrients are absorbed from the less salty intercellular fluid into the cell cavity filled with a more concentrated solution.

Interesting fact. The effect of osmosis was first described by the French abbot Jean-Antoine Nolet in 1748. It’s not very clear why, but one evening, without finishing the red wine, he decided to pour the remainder into the casing of a pig’s bladder and hide it in a barrel of water. In the morning the “vessel” was swollen, and the wine was greatly diluted. The clergyman established that only water penetrated from the barrel into the bubble. This was the first time in history that the phenomenon of osmosis was described.

So, nature came up with everything for us; science could only study this process and reproduce it. At first, direct osmosis was used to purify or desalinate water. The cleaning process looks like this: on one side of the membrane we have sea water, on the other, a concentrated solution of ammonium carbonate. First, molecules of sea water penetrate through the membrane under the influence of osmotic pressure, then the resulting ammonium solution diluted with filtered water is heated to 60-80 ° C, the ammonium evaporates, and the output is a distillate.

Reverse and forward osmosis diagram

However, in the domestic sphere this cleaning method is too complicated. In 1970, a fundamentally new method was proposed, based on the already known principle of forward osmosis. The challenge facing the engineers was to obtain distilled water from a solution without additional iterations. The semi-permeable membrane remains the same - it is a synthetic substance that allows only water molecules to pass through and retains dissolved pollutants. Natural osmotic pressure is replaced by artificial hydrostatic pressure. Since water moves in the opposite direction from solution to distillate, the method is called reverse osmosis. The simplicity and 100% effectiveness of the method have become the key to its spread throughout the world and in all spheres of human activity. In the food industry, reverse osmosis has replaced heat treatment in the production of concentrated juices and milk powder, which makes it possible to preserve useful microelements in products. Medicine was attracted to reverse osmosis by its guarantee of complete sterilization of water, because the membrane even retains cholera and hepatitis viruses. The use of reverse osmosis for desalination has greatly increased the availability of drinking water in arid and marine regions. In 2012, Singapore launched a project to treat wastewater using reverse osmosis and then return the resulting water to the water supply. Moreover, this water received the highest rating from WHO and USEPA compared to other natural Singapore sources.

Reverse osmosis membrane - how does it work?

The answer to this question is incredibly difficult to find on the Internet. This is due to the fact that the authors of the articles are weak in physics and chemistry and rewrite the same nonsense one after another, further confusing the average person. Let's figure out how water is transported through a semi-permeable membrane?

The originally proposed explanation, later found to be erroneous, but so beloved by the general public due to its simplicity of explanation, the “sieve” model, is that water molecules are separated from solution due to their small size. In practice, even the molecules of ordinary table salt (sodium ions and chloride ions) are comparable in size to water molecules, and some pollutants are smaller in size, which eliminates the possibility of this principle of operation.

A reverse osmosis membrane is NOT
a sieve. Otherwise, it would easily allow molecules of ordinary table salt to pass through.

In fact, the membrane only conducts water molecules through itself according to a principle reminiscent of the movement of electric current. It is based on the principle of capillary filtration selective permeability. The membrane, made of a special material, is capable of forming hydrogen bonds with water. A film of bound water adheres to the inside and outside of the membrane and fills all the pores of the membrane. Bound water differs significantly in physical properties from water in a free state, formed by a network of directed hydrogen intermolecular bonds. Only a water molecule can penetrate into the layer of bound water and pass through the membrane. This is the principle and it has nothing to do with the notorious sieve. If you still have questions, we recommend watching a fun and entertaining video about the membrane structure.

Benefits of reverse osmosis

The headlines of articles “the harms or benefits of reverse osmosis” often catch your eye. In our opinion, it is obvious that drinking chlorinated, ferrous, hard water is harmful for both people and pets. There is no doubt about the benefits of drinking clean water, both in terms of health and aesthetics. It’s very pleasant when the tea does not become covered with a film after it has cooled, and scale does not form in the teapot. So why do people ask this question to the Internet over and over again? Let's dispel these myths once and for all.

MYTH No. 1. All beneficial substances from the water are filtered out, as a result the body suffers from a lack of salts and minerals.

There is a belief that drinking distilled water is bad for your health. Yes, it is bad if you don't drink or eat anything else. However, it is very difficult to imagine such a degenerate situation, because in 20, maximum 50 days a person will die of hunger. In ordinary life, you prepare tea, coffee, salt and pepper food, consume ready-made juices, fruits, and vegetables. Not to mention chips and fast food. Your body gets enough, if not excessive, amounts of salts and minerals from food. However, we all know that sometimes fighting human misconceptions is even harder than fighting windmills, so manufacturers of household filter systems simply added a mineralizer cartridge after the reverse osmosis membrane.

An interesting fact is that reverse osmosis systems are used on submarines and naval vessels. According to military doctors, such water does not affect the health and general condition of personnel.

MYTH No. 2. Reverse osmosis water washes out beneficial substances from the human body.

We hope you started reading our article first, so remember what direct or natural osmosis is. The cell takes all useful salts and minerals from the water. Water as a courier is just a delivery system. The process does not go in reverse. Believing in such a myth is akin to believing that the pizza delivery guy, after giving you your order, will suddenly take out the entire contents of your refrigerator.

MYTH No. 3. Reverse osmosis water - goodbye teeth.

This is truly a great find for counterfeiters. Nobody wants to lose teeth, and many people are afraid of dentists like fire, so such a “duck” can turn many people away from osmosis. However, of course, this is not true. Calcium enters the body with food, not with water (the daily requirement of calcium is contained in 10 liters of water), and water cannot wash calcium out of teeth either.

An interesting fact from the early 90s. in the city of Zelenograd, a satellite of Moscow, the quality of teeth among schoolchildren has sharply deteriorated. Doctors turned to parents with a recommendation to abandon the then popular and promoted toothpastes “with fluoride for strong teeth.” This was due to the excess fluoride content in tap water, which, together with toothpaste, contributed to the destruction of teeth, rather than their strength.

Therefore, water containing excess impurities is more likely to destroy your teeth than absolutely pure neutral water.

MYTH No. 4. It's definitely not tasty.

As you know, all markers have different tastes and colors. It takes 3 days for a person to get used to looking at the world upside down, so the taste of water is just a habit. However, it is an indisputable fact that bad water spoils the appearance and taste of food. Reverse osmosis purified water will help you bring out the real taste of your favorite foods.

Reverse osmosis filter - savings for the home

Let's talk about reverse osmosis water filters. In regions with poor tap water (and this is almost all of Russia, with the exception of cities with a population of over a million), this is the only budgetary way to provide households with clean drinking water.

Let’s check whether there is an economic benefit to buying a reverse osmosis filter, or whether it’s easier not to bother and continue to carry five-liter bottles from the store in winter and summer. So, let's imagine a family of three. Tea, coffee, soup - every day a household consumes at least 4.5 liters of water (1642 liters / 1.64 cubic meters / 328 bottles per year). Let us immediately note that using a cooler with bottled water at home is not at all profitable, since the annual cost of water will be at least 25,800 ₽ (Water 86 bottles of 19 liters * 300 ₽/bottle).

Five liter canisters

1st year. Water 328 bottles * 30 ₽/bottle = 9,840 ₽.

2nd year. Water 328 bottles * 30 ₽/bottle = 9,840 ₽.

Osmosis water filter

1st year. Filter price 7,000 ₽ + installation 2,500 ₽= 9,500 ₽

2nd year. Set of cartridges 3,000 ₽ = 3,000 ₽

Even according to the most conservative estimates, in the first year the costs will be comparable, and in the subsequent years you will receive a triple benefit. It is worth considering that purchased water is becoming more expensive all the time (compared to 2012, water in 5 and 19 liter bottles has almost doubled in price).

Reverse osmosis filters - ratings, reviews, recommendations

How to choose a reverse osmosis filter? There are several points that are worth paying attention to if you decide to buy a water purification filter. For your convenience, we post a checklist:

Direct flow or storage.

Just 10 years ago, only storage systems were presented on the market. This was due to the low productivity of reverse osmosis membranes (50 -150 Gal, filtration capacity from 125 to 300 ml/min). Such systems are always complemented by a storage tank (volume from 7.6 to 15 liters depending on the model). Today, new high-performance direct-flow membranes with a capacity of up to 800 ml/min have appeared on the market. Such an effective membrane eliminates the need for a storage tank. In practice, the filtration rate in a system with such a membrane ranges from 500 to 700 ml/min, which allows you to fill the kettle in 2-3 minutes. The advantages of a storage filter are a relatively low price, clean water in large volumes is always at hand, good water pressure from a clean water tap. Disadvantages - it requires a lot of free space to install a storage tank; with minimal consumption or a break in consumption, water can stagnate. The advantages of a direct-flow filter are a long membrane life (3 years), compactness, water is always fresh, and no need to flush the system after a long break in operation. The disadvantages are low pressure from the clean water tap and the high price of both the filter itself and replacement cartridges.

Cartridges 10SL or 11".

Assembling a household filter system based on 11-inch cartridges began relatively recently. Previously, all household filters looked the same, three flasks on a bracket - the first three stages of cleaning, on top of which an additional reverse osmosis membrane and a mineralizer cartridge were installed. Today a more elegant design has appeared, consisting of four eleven-inch cartridges hidden in a neat, flat case. The advantages of the old version are the low price. Disadvantages - large dimensions, unhygienic access to cartridges when replacing, the need to wash the flasks when replacing cartridges, the risk of losing the seal of the flask. The advantages of the new design are the simplicity and speed of replacing filters (quick-removable filters), hygiene (there is practically no possibility of contaminating the cartridges when replacing), an extremely low probability of leakage, compactness and elegant design, the disadvantage is the high price.

With or without pressure boosting pump.

As mentioned earlier, for reverse osmosis to work, sufficient pressure in the system is required (from 2 to 4 atm). This is regulated pressure in an apartment building, but in old houses it may not meet the standards, and even more so in a country house or cottage. If the pressure from the cold water tap is weak, you need to measure the pressure in the system before purchasing a filter. The pressure is below normal - you need to choose a water filter with a pump. Please note that when installing such a filter, it is necessary to provide for the possibility of connecting the pump to the electrical network.

The faucet is separate or combined.

As a rule, the filter system comes with a clean water tap under the sink. Pay attention to the design which one you like best. The faucet is intended for drinking water only. In stores you can find taps that combine the supply of tap water and drinking water. A separate valve is provided for supplying drinking water. It looks, of course, more aesthetically pleasing, and there is no need to drill a second hole in the sink, but the cost of such a combined faucet can be significant.

Installing a water filter

You can install the filter at home either on your own or by ordering installation from our service center by phone. If you decide to install the filter yourself, carefully read the instruction manual and watch video instructions, many of which are posted on the Internet. Some tips and life hacks from our customer service

After delivery of the filter, especially in the autumn-winter period, you must wait 8 to 24 hours before starting installation.

remove reverse osmosis drainage after the siphon. Look at the photos, in the first one the drainage is placed incorrectly. The water seal should muffle the sound of draining water. When connected to the siphon, you will always hear the murmur of drainage water. The second and third photos show the correct connection after the usual siphon and the intricate IKEA one. In both cases, the siphon acts as a muffler, since there is water in it and does not allow sound to spread.

If you decide to buy a direct-flow high-performance filter, we strongly recommend that you additionally install a flow-through main filter on the cold water pipe. Such a filter, designed to remove large mechanical contaminants, will allow you to use the membrane resource to the maximum.

Purifier with reverse osmosis

The second household appliance with a built-in reverse osmosis filter is the purifier. In appearance, it is similar to a floor or desktop cooler with heating or cooling function, only equipped with a built-in filtration system. You can read about the different types of purifiers in our article “Do you want to buy a purifier? We’ll tell you how to choose,” today we want to focus more attention on purifiers with reverse osmosis.

Unlike filter systems for washing, purifiers rarely use storage tanks. This is due to the fact that water accumulates in the internal hot and cold water tanks (the total volume of the tanks is from 4 to 15 liters), which corresponds to the volume of the storage tank in the filter system. Due to the more complex design of the purifier itself, the device is not equipped with an additional pump. If your office has low water pressure, we suggest installing a reverse osmosis filter with a pump and connecting it to a drinking water dispenser (a purifier without a filtration system or a fountain). This solution is more profitable for the buyer and more convenient from an installation point of view.

As for the design of the purifier with reverse osmosis, then:

  • cooling in the device is usually compressor (the high cost of the product makes it possible not to save on the cooling method);
  • the device always has heating and cooling functions (which can be turned off if necessary by toggle switches on the back or side panel of the device);
  • Additionally, the device can be equipped with a scald protection function, an ice maker, a monitor, backlight, and a touch screen;
  • The filter system can be assembled either on the basis of 11″ cartridges or on the basis of a high-performance direct-flow membrane.

Top 3 models of purifiers with reverse osmosis

Purifier Ecotronic M11-L (RO-857) with reverse osmosis.

Stylish purifier, available in two colors, black and silver with steel inserts on the front panel. The distribution of drinking water is carried out using keys from three taps (hot, cold, room temperature). The hot water tap is equipped with scalding protection. The device is designed to ensure the drinking regime in a team of up to 10 people.

A distinctive feature of this model is the filtration system. The first stage of cleaning is a mechanical filter K871 made of non-woven polypropylene. The second stage is a sorption cartridge made of pressed activated carbon K870. The third is a direct-flow membrane K857. The fourth is a sorption cartridge made of granular activated carbon K875.

Know-how from the BIORAY company is the use of a high-performance direct-flow membrane K857 in the filtration system, which made it possible to abandon large tanks in the purifier, thereby reducing the cost of manufacturing the housing, offering the consumer a purifier with reverse osmosis at an incredibly attractive price. The long service life of the membrane (up to 50,000 liters) allows you to replace it less frequently, and the high filtration speed (up to 1.5 liters per minute) allows you to avoid queues for morning coffee and tea.

Purifier Ecotronic V90-R4LZ

One of the most modern purifiers in our store. Smooth lines and unusual design attract attention. The black model will complement any, even the most sophisticated interior, and the cherry one will become the highlight of your office. Water is distributed from a single tap. The water temperature is selected using touch keys. Another gift from Ecotronic is a built-in ice maker. Now you will always have clean, transparent cocktail ice at your fingertips.

An interesting fact is that you will never be able to make truly cool transparent ice from ordinary tap water without additional tricks (for example, boiling). This happens because in tap water there are one hundred parts of impurities per million parts of water. Each ice crystal has 6 rays, to which impurities freeze, disrupting the crystal lattice and creating the effect of cloudy ice. By the way, an inquisitive reader may ask why not the entire piece of ice becomes cloudy? It looks more like there is a murky galaxy inside the transparent cube? The secret is that the ice crystal tries to grow as correctly as possible; starting to grow from the edges of the cube, it pushes out all the impurities inside, which freeze last.

The purifier has a built-in four-stage filtration system (polypropylene, carbon, reverse osmosis membrane, carbon) based on eleven-inch cartridges.

Purifier Ecotronic V42-R4T Black-silver

We cannot ignore the tabletop purifier with reverse osmosis in our review. Sometimes the kitchen or office space does not allow for the installation of a full-fledged floor purifier. A black and silver device with a built-in four-stage filtration system will allow you to drink up to 10 people. An excellent solution for a compact space.

Atoll A-550 box

If you want to see a minimum of tubes, look towards the boxed versions. Such as Atoll A-550 box. In it, all filter elements and the tank are hidden inside a plastic case. 4 of the 5 cleaning stages are represented by Inline type cartridges, i.e. If necessary, they can be replaced with products of third-party brands. The 1812-50 membrane is housed in a standard housing and delivers up to 120 liters per day or about 80 ml per minute.

Atoll 550 BOX - a popular box model of a reverse osmosis filter

The filter size is 440x420x240 mm, so the tank inside is also small. It can hold a maximum of 4.6 liters of purified water. There are versions with a pump. Modifications of the A-575 box with a 1812-75 membrane are produced in the same case, i.e. 1.5 times more productive compared to the younger version. You can find versions with a mineralizer and a pump.

The main advantage of such solutions: there are no protruding tubes, everything is hidden by plastic. On the other hand, you overpay for this plastic. At your leisure, try to calculate how much this overpayment will cost you if you assemble a similar system, but without a box. Let's save your time: about half the cost of the kit is the box. Half, Karl!

Tips for choosing

As you can easily see, all systems are approximately the same: externally and in terms of cleaning quality. They may differ in design and ease of use, but the concept is the same everywhere. First, prefiltration to remove solid impurities and chlorine, then a reverse osmosis membrane to remove everything else, postfiltration to further purify the water after the tank, a mineralizer, etc. Read more about the sequence of cartridges in a separate article.

About the need to purchase

Reverse osmosis is really only needed in 3 cases:

  1. The water contains nitrates - compounds that turn into toxic nitrites in the stomach. Only reverse osmosis and special expensive ion exchange resins can remove nitrates;
  2. want to switch from bottled water to filtered water, because it’s more convenient and profitable. At the most rough estimates, clean water will cost half as much;
  3. Tired of scale in the kettle and the need to frequently change softening cartridges in the flow filter

If this doesn’t apply to you, you shouldn’t spend money on such a system - something simpler, like a flow-through or filter jug, will help.

About the number of cleaning stages

Usually 4-5 steps are enough to get good quality water. Is it possible to do less? Easily! Below is a small life hack that will help you save some money.

Number of stages of water purification - approach wisely and don’t overpay for unnecessary things
Control yourself. Don't pay for unnecessary steps - this will not improve the quality of water purification!

So you bought a classic system, for example, Geyser Prestige. You use it, but 6 months pass - it’s time to change the pre-filters and post-filters. At the same time, you know for sure that the source water is not chlorinated. This is easy to understand by the absence of a specific smell.

Then you can throw out the 2nd and 3rd cartridges, and replace only the 1st and post-filter. Yes, you heard right, 2 flasks will be empty. Simply because their presence in a particular case does not make sense. Prefiltration will only include mechanical cleaning from sand, rust, etc. impurities insoluble in water.

About the storage tank

Most often, household reverse osmosis systems are equipped with 1812-50 GPD membranes. Their maximum output is 190 liters per day or approximately 130 ml per minute. We don't have the patience to wait 10-15 minutes for the kettle to fill, so we came up with storage tanks. These are intermediate containers that always have a supply of purified water.

If used incorrectly, a storage tank is a home for germs

You need to understand that no matter how clean the water after the membrane is, in a closed container it is simply doomed to become a medium for the development of bacteria. Therefore, there is a carbon post-filter that purifies the water after the storage tank. Therefore, manufacturers do not recommend leaving the filter idle for a long time. The tank will become rotten and will have to be washed with bleach to disinfect it. But this is the most pessimistic scenario. If you follow the manufacturer's recommendations, you don't have to worry about poisoning, etc. things.

But I still recommend considering options without intermediate containers (Prestige-2 or Econic Osmos Stream) or those where these containers can be easily washed, for example, a jug like in Aquaphor DWM-31 . In some cases, you don’t even have to sacrifice the speed of supply of purified water!

About water pressure

The bigger, the better. It's better to measure before purchasing. You can contact plumbers, filter installers, or do it yourself by screwing a pressure gauge to a flexible liner or shower hose.

You can measure the pressure in the water supply using a pressure gauge and an adapter to the shower hose

A pressure of 3.5 atmospheres will allow any filter to reach its nominal performance. However, there are models that work with less pressure. As a last resort, you can install a pressure booster pump.

What is extremely important: the higher the pressure, the less water is drained into the sewer!

About the mineralizer

According to SanPiN 2.1.4.1074-01, the pH value of drinking water should be in the range of 6-9 units. But after reverse osmosis it can sometimes be below 6, which can be felt by the changed taste: the water seems bitter. To avoid this, use a mineralizer. It usually contains crushed calcite or dolomite - bad, but soluble minerals of natural origin.

Mineralizer with calcite

Its use will only be noticeable to those who plan to drink raw purified water. For tea and coffee, a mineralizer does not make sense. Plus, you need to take into account that only the first portions of water will contain a noticeable amount of salts, because it was inside the mineralizer for some time, all the rest will contain much less due to the poor solubility of the filling.

About replacing cartridges

As practice shows, during the first replacement you can determine whether you need to follow the manufacturer's recommendations or whether you can save money. What are we talking about?

For example, servicing classic systems. We unscrew the pre-filter flasks and look at the condition of the cartridges. The first will be the element for mechanical cleaning. If it remains white or not very dirty, then the prefilters can NOT be CHANGED for longer than the regulated period. If it is covered in mucus and dirt, you may need to do this more often than recommended. The same goes for the rest of the steps - everything can be determined visually with sufficient accuracy.

Clean and dirty mechanical cleaning cartridge

Another thing is the post filter, if there is one. If a powerful shield in the form of a membrane is installed after the pre-filters, then after the post-filter the water goes directly to the consumer. Therefore, it is better to change it every 6 months. And if, for example, you went on vacation for a week, then upon arrival it is better to replace the post filter.

In modular systems, you can focus on changing the filtration speed. Cartridges will physically become clogged with impurities over time, which will directly affect their throughput.

About water consumption

It will increase. Do not believe in stories that due to the low filtration rate, the water meter does not record consumption. He records everything.

Water consumption when operating a reverse osmosis system increases

The flow rate will be proportional to the amount of permeate and drainage. And it depends on several factors:

  • quality and condition of prefilters. The more contaminated they are, the worse the pressure and the more often the leaks of impurities that harm the membrane;
  • quality and condition of the membrane. The more impurities the membrane cuts off, the more water will drain into the drain. The longer its service life, the more deposits on the material and the lower its throughput. Accordingly, more water will go into the sewer;
  • pressure in the water supply. The higher it is, the less it will drain into the sewer;
  • the presence of storage tanks. We are talking about pressurized air tanks because they create back pressure and reduce the efficiency of the system at medium and low pressure in the water supply

Best reverse osmosis systems with a large tank

The design of such models requires the presence of tanks for storing purified liquid with a volume of 10 liters or more. This ensures constant access to filtered water and ease of use in high-consumption conditions.
